Wife coming around to the Subaru Fold....

Recommended Posts

Well my wife, who basically dislikes my Subarus, just called me and said that she is looking at a 1992 SVX w/160k on the ticker.

She is looking for a car b/c she is sick of her current car and doesn't want to make payments.

So it's got no signs of a HG problem. Tranny feels like it shifts well. If that blows that it's time for a 5spd swap:headbang:

Anywho the SVX is at a tow yard and the dude wants 1500 for it. Even if it turns out to be a basket case it's still worth that in parts.

Will keep you posted.

one more  for good measure.

Well it's got 125k on the odometer.

interior is in good shape for a 13 y/o car.

Engine is strong. Oil looks nasty, but I plan to change it out tomorrow.

Also plan to do a Seafoam treatment.

We've been taking it easy on the tranny b/c of the problems the SVX has.

I already looked at Smallcar.com and am planning to get the headlight kit and the Stage1 ECU.

Excellent.

I read on an SVX site that the reson that they fail is that the clutch material on the lockup converter flakes off and clogs the tranny cooler. It STRONGLY suggested a external cooler and an in line filter, that is changed VERY regularly. It also stated that the lines and cooling ports are too small for the heat load, i dont know if that can be changed. The site said if that is done, there is no no reason why the tranny should not last.

Congrats on the SVX im looking for one myself as soon as i can bend again.

Thanks

Here is the list of stuff that needs to be worked on in order of importance

1) driver side shoulder belt carrier does not move back.

2) Airbag light is on

3) fuel gauge does not work

4) there is a clunking on the pass side front wheel area when you turn at low speed. Me thinks ball joint.

5) possible wheel bearing job on the driver side, not sure which wheel

6) above mentioned tranny oil filter

7) gas struts for hood and trunk

8) wash and wax and detail.

9) repeat above....

  • 1 month later...

more on this area.

Well she officially has Suba-lust.

We say that SVX on Craigslist and she asked to go see it.

I she even mentioned buying it.

Granted we have 3 cars as is and one garage. So we would have to play musical chairs with the cars on street sweeping day. And it would be a PITA to move 4 cars cross county to Charlotte.

Well.. Funny how the SUBARU NUT is the one coming up w/reason NOT to buy a Subaru

if it needs anything...be sure to price out SVX parts before making a decisions. windshields....$700.......some throttle/idle controller runs $200 and is nearly impossible to find used.....parts are very expensive and hard to find.

from the pictures it doesn't need anything.

I do plan to hoard parts from now on though b/c I realize that the parts are impossible to replace.

If I really want to keep it I may eventually do a EJ tranny swap and possibly even an engine swap if it comes to that. Maybe an H6.

when you get it the two biggest things you can do is a tranny cooler and a spin on tranny filter. Then you can get around to either a manual or a legacy automatic tranny swap.

i think it called the EG33?

I ment the newer flat 6 engines that subaru is putting out. the H6 3.0 motor.

Yeah I have the tranny cooler part covered.

SVX do not have an H6 in them. The SVX is a regular 4 cyl with two more cylinders added. SVX has a timing belt, H6 has a timing chain ... i can go on but you get the idea....

and sure one less svx for me to buy
