doktorbill
Have a 98 Forester with EJ25 DOHC and 5 speed (AWD). The transmission was damaged when I bought the car used. I have located a 95 Legacy SW with EJ22 and 5 speed (AWD). Suspect the final drive ratios are different between the Legacy and the Forester. Will the 95 Legacy trans and rear diff swap into the Forester, or is there something that would stop me, such as different lengths of transmissions, mismatched mounts? The Legacy has a cable clutch, while the Forester has a hydraulic clutch-- hopefully this can be swapped. Thanks for your help!
Legacy777
They should be interchangable. Changing the 95 over to a hydraulic clutch "shouldn't" be an issue. The clutch fork is different between cable & hydraulic. So you'll just need to take those parts from your 98 trans, and re-use them on the 95. Also, I believe the pivot ball for the clutch fork will need to be changed. There are two bosses in the transmission case. Look at both transmissions and verify the pivot is in the same spot, or if it's not, you'll need to move it. This may require you tapping the bosses. Only other thing to note would be speed sensors/speedo cable. I'm not sure if the 95 has a speed sensor, or uses a cable. I'm pretty sure it uses a speed sensor, so it shouldn't be an issue. Otherwise, you should be able to remove the cable and put in the speed sensor...
