EJ20G Questions

Alright, after some perusing of all of this ej shenanigans I feel I can ask some questions without looking like so much of an idiot. EJ20G+EA82 5SPD=Heartbreak (keeping in mind it is the GL tranny so it's not AWD I wouldn't mind procuring a AWD tranny if need be), or can they play? Can you keep power steering? I would love to just swap the motor and pay for the harness and adaptor. Already did one swap on my 88 GL Did EA82 to EA82T, simple swap, but now I have the quest for more power so I can get rid of any money I moght come across. Sorry about some questions just the info is so scattered out I probly haven't found half of it after 3 hours of searching. now another question, anyway we can take all this info and get it on one thread, like a writeup in the tech section? Maybe a motor swap thread, electrical swap thread and tranny and diff swap thread to cover all the bases of this swap without any holes like I have found. Or maybe scour the vast reaches the internet heap, and compile all the links partaining to this swap and get them in one place. I will probly think of some more questions here real soon. Thanks guys and good to be back I haven't been here in months.

There are adapters out there, but I won't mate the EJ20G to a FWD EA82 tranny (my assumption since you didn't say it was 4WD), not unless you are very good at replacing blown trannies. If you want to keep the FWD, I'd use a FWD tranny off of an early Legacy or Impreza, you'll need to change your axles to turbo axles, but that would probably be for the better anyway. Ther have been a few EJ20G swaps into EA82 series cars (and even some EA81 series cars) so there should be plenty of advise out there. Yes, you will be able to keep the power steering, but you may need to get some new lines made. The front drive shaft of the two piece driveline will need to be shortened 55mm if you are using a 4WD or AWD tranny. Unless you really feel that need to have a D/R tranny, I'd stick with an EJ series tranny.

It is a dual range 4wd tranny, so it should work right? Powerwise aren't these tranny's good to like 250?

I doubt that, they didn't put them on EA82Ts and they had around 110hp. So why would you want to keep the D/R, you will have alot more power and torque, even before the turbo comes in around 3000rpm.

OK, so when I swap the tranny out, I can use the one on the EJ20 right?

Yes, but you will need turbo axles (25 spline versus 23 spline) and you'll need to get the front section of your driveline shortened 55mm.

What type of tranny should I run with the EJ20G, that is most economical/reliable? Just the one outta the WRX?
Well that really depends upon which EJ20G you are running. The ones in the Legacys had either 200 or 220hp, the ones in the Imprezas (WRXs) ran from 220 to 275hp. Depending on how you plan to use the car, you could probably get by with any of the EJ series trannies. One thing to remember, the WRX trannies use a hydraulic clutch, the N/As use a cable clutch. Your car will probably have a cable clutch setup, so to use the WRX tranny, you'd need to add a hydraulic clutch setup (clutch pedal assy and all).
