Meeky Moose
since i manage the store here in ruckersville, va.. i thought i might drop some tips when shopping for subaru parts at advance.. 90% of the parts listed for a subaru at advance are wrong.. if you need ea82 non turbo parts have then look at a 90 loyale.. if you need ea82 turbo parts have them look up a 90 loyale rs turbo.. and if you need ea81 parts have them look up an 84 brat.. thats the only way you'll get the right stuff.. if its not used or wrong part in the box.. in my store i have started writing in big letters, defect, core, etc.. with a black marker.. so they can't send out junk from the warehouse.. so if you get one don't blame my store, hahaha.. ohh and the listings are mostly accurate for the legacys, outbacks, etc.. they're justwrong for the old gen stuff.. mikeshoup
Another tip: 88 XT6s don't exist in their database, order for a 89 XT6. 90 XT6s DO however exist, and the informed knows that Subaru didn't sell the XT6 in 90... they skipped a model year. msteel
I have a '92 Loyale. For what it's worth, I seem to get parts that are "more right" or at least more specific from Advance than I do from AutoZone. OK, now I've probably started a war....
subiemech85
and what do I look for when parts are needed for a '80 ea71 wagon and why can't I find a NIPPONDENSO cap and rotor for a '83 ea81 distributor installed in the above ea71???? WHY is it all HITACHI??????? and another issue is for '85 wagon
rallyruss
I worked at a small independant parts store long before I ever got into the subaru madness my self. I rember the listings for anything on older subarus were the worst. I really hated them for that at the time. now I am a on the other side of the counter and feel the customers frustration too. TROGDOR!
I worked for Advance for a year and a half. Now when I go to one, I ask to use the keyboard myself. They usually let me. Saves a lot of trouble, because I already know where to look. Here's a couple games for you MM, using the computers only... The easy one: find a 25 spline axle for an '89 RX. The hard one: a Y-pipe for an '89 4WD XT 4 cylinder. FYI, I managed to accomplish both. And yeah, they really need to get their shiat straight when it comes to the old gen stuff. Doesn't help that Advance will hire any Joe with retail experience, whereas Autozone and Napa require a test of automotive knowledge before hiring anyone. Meeky Moose
25 spline axles are easy.. y-pipes have been discontinued, could get them last year, but not now.. i imagine i could special order one though.. people aren't hired in my atore unless they know something, and i quiz'm I worked for Advance for a year and a half. heartless
i buy from advance regularly and so far the only thing i have had an issue with was the tierod ends - but stuff does happen....got ones for manual steering the first time - got the right ones the second time - with a big discount! the guys at my local advance store know me when i come in...about the only old gen Subaru customer they have!! LOL (and i know thier system well enough to tell them where to look when i get the "new guy")
thealleyboy
One of the things I like about Advance, is that their screw ups sometimes work to our advantage. For example, if you order a "rebuilt" 25 spline axle for a late 80's Turbo A/T model, they'll send brand new OEM type for same $69.99 price!! Not sure if this is the case all over the country, but I've gotten several in this area. For those in the midwest, ask that they order from the "Jeffersonville, OH", or "Buffalo NY" warehouse. I agree that you have to take the reigns anytime you deal with these types of places. The more you know about variations in models the better. The "Loyale" applications in their database replaced those of the older models, so selecting the Loyale part #'s are usually (but not always) a good bet for the more common stuff. TROGDOR!
25 spline axles are easy..y-pipes have been discontinued, could get them last year, but not now.. i imagine i could special order one though.. people aren't hired in my atore unless they know something, and i quiz'm Hmmm, I got the Y-pipe fairly recently. Took a lot of hunting, but I got it on a 2-day shipment As for the axle thing, they list no 25 spline ones at all for '89. Had to go back to 88. And most of the search results on a turbo car will be 23 spline, even those that are supposed to be 25. I'd have been pretty aggravated if I didn't know how to find what I was looking for. Also, they sent me a core axle instead of a new one, and I had to wait another day to get it. The store I worked at had no quiz about knowledge at all. They'd take anyone, and 75% of the people there didn't know jack about cars. They hired a manager from McDonald's once, who besides not knowing about cars, just wasn't that bright. I had to talk her through everything for months and months, the only thing I didn't help her with was the closing procedure at night. If I went more than a few feet from the counter at any time we were the only two working, she'd be yelling for me within minutes, asking what something was. bgd73
Very true about advance, my brother in law was manager here at advance. Lucky to have someone patient to cross reference some stuff and take time to verify parts. He is no longer there,I recently got wrong wheel bearing delivered inside correct box...... "if it ain't a chevy..who cares." makes me want to:banghead:
dragonfire
well, well, well, i guess since i am logistics for advanced auto parts. i need to post as well. ok as others have said, find parts pro that has been mechanic. or is good with cars. i have two in the store in front of the warehouse i am working for. if i go when those people are not working (example). i was looking for an oil pump seal. went before work had non mechanically inclinded parts pro he could not find it. with help from another like him. but when i go that afternoon the commercial guy i like to deal with found it in 20 seconds. but as for what has been said about loyale for ea8s parts and such he is right. just try to find parts pro that is a car person or mechanic and you should be fine. go pdq 71. woohooo. just be patient. if they can not find the part then try anohter parts pro get to know them cause if you have older gen subie they will know you. go subie. thealleyboy
Dragon: I've always thought Advance was the best of the discount suppliers as far as overall quality. I've bought stuff there with brands like "Midas" stamped on the box, and plenty of the high quality Japanese OEM parts for the same prices that the others charge for inferior Hong Kong goods. Being in logistics, is there any advice you can share on cutting thru the crap, and getting to the cream of the crop? Are there certain Advance warehouses that get more of the good OEM overstock parts? I mentioned a couple above that I have had good luck with. subyrally
so wait, im not the only one that works for advance?!? granted, my store is #1 in our division:banana: and since i work there, there is always a subaru fiend on hand to find the right parts the first time. on a bit of an off topic side note, if you look through the advance computers in the part number look up, you can find a full sized refrigerator and washer and dryer. John dc 29 or lakeland warehouse in here in florida seem to be the best, for oem parts but the old stand by mater pdq in tennesse is my other choice. what about for you can you tell me if any around you has subie ea82 parts. most of them here (florida) dont really carry to many ea82 parts cause those cars did not sell as well as in the north.
