Steve B
Is anyone brave enough to list the various Subaru engine desginations? All I know is there was an early 1600 pushrod motor, then an 1.8 liter belt driven sohc engibne like the one in my trusty '87. I know there was a 2.2 liter engine too. Now I have the 2006 2.5 liter motor in a new Outback. Is that the EJ22 engine? Anybody know this stuff? Any notorious bad stuff to look out for for the 2.5? In a 2006? i doubt it as they have not been around long enough to find out. i know the 6cyl looks like it is developing a tensioner issue, but havent heard anything about the 06 fours. nipper
Steve B
I guess head gasket trouble seems common to the 2.2 and 2.5 liter engines. My old 1.8 liter engine went over 200,000 before I had a blown head gasket that I "repaired" with a block sealer product. I wonder if the 2005/2006 engines have had this trouble surface yet? jamal
The early ones were EAs. Everything new is an EJ. The next two numbers are the displacement. ER27, EG33, and EZ30 are the 6-cylinders. Then there are a bunch of variations of each. I don't really know what they all are, but basically, the EJ201 is like the first variation of the 2.0. The 05 WRX had a EJ207 I think. Anyway they work kind of like that and you have to get into the next few numbers/vin to figure out exactly what came from what, etc. This page has a table. And messed up formatting at the top or something. http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=
Olnick
I guess head gasket trouble seems common to the 2.2 and 2.5 liter engines. Not quite true. 2.5s have certainly had more than their share of headgasket problems. It's a rarity in the 2.2 however. That's why many of us consider the "bulletproof" 2.2 to be the best engine Subaru ever built!

And messed up formatting at the top or something. http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20 There are a couple of things wrong with that chart, by that chart there were no EJ22 built in 94, it shows a 1600 cc engine built from 80 to 82 and 83 to 87 as an EA81, it would be an EA71, and it shows a 1500 cc built from 85 to 89, the horse power and torque would indicate a 1600 cc engine and the fact that it is in a 2dr would lead me to believe it is in a Hatchback, that would make that an EA71 also. I believe that prior to the XT6 and Justy, the numbers after the letters were the piston diameter in mm's. Although the EA81 and EA82 share the same size pistons, they may have used that 82 to differentiate between the OHV and OHC engines. Prior to 97, the EJ20's had letters at the end to tell what type of engine it was, ie the EJ20 was a DOHC turbocharged engine, after 97 the EJ205 and EJ207 were DOHC turbocharged engines. The engine it the famous 22B was an EJ22G, a DOHC 2200 cc turbocharged engine. The current turbocharged engines are EJ257s.

idosubaru
the 2.2's definitely don't have head gasket problems. being around longer (since they came out well before the 2.5's) you'll see some 2.2's with issues more related to age and maintenance than design. EJ refers to newer motors. the numbering is the size of the engine. EJ22 is 2.2 liter, EJ25 is 2.5 liter, etc. there are variations among them as mentioned. subaru came out with a "new" head gasket design that your engine surely has, doubt you'll have any trouble with it. Dr. RX
actually nope... sti = EJ257 Legacy, impreza, forester = EJ255 Jamie Thanks Jamie, that figures, the only engine that I hear people talking about is the EJ257 as if that is the only engine. Since most of those people that I talk with are into performance, I guess the EJ257 would be their engine of choice.

DerFahrer
I see a few errors, and one I'm not sure about. First off, are you sure the 360 motor is an EA designation? The 360 engine has virtually NOTHING in common with any boxer engine. And where's the 1000 engine? The Impreza 1.8 is an EJ18, not an EA18. If you want to get technical, it's an EJ18E. The SVX is technically an EG33D. The WRX 2.0 in America is the EJ205. The EJ207 is the JDM STi engine. There is no EZ30R. All 3.0 6cyls are EZ30D. There's a few HP and compression anomalies too, but I'll try to look those up later. That's all I can confirm at the moment. I might find more stuff out later. Kostamojen
I didnt know there was a 1000 engine. Thats probably the EA52. Know any info on it? Fixed the EJ18, that was a typo. I'm not including the E designation until I get both designations. Ill try to check on that one at work tommorow. Theres only one EG33, so the D doesnt really matter. I added it anyway. Are you sure the EZ30-R isnt EZ30R? Ill check tommorow too, but it shouldnt be the same as the earlier model considering the major differences. DerFahrer
Whoa... information overload!! Did some browsing through the model information for much of the Subaru line... There are also EJ222's and EJ223's, as well as EJ252's, and EJ259's. Once I recover from the meltdown , I'll try to see what car has what. Oh, and the 1000 never made it over to the US. It was in the JDM FF1. So that's probably why you can't get any info on it.
