My 'new' 79 wagon (thanks RavenTBK!)

Recommended Posts

Well, if you've been keeping up with the FS section, you remember the 79 wagon that RavenTBK had in north FL, that sat for sale for years!

Well, it's mine now! :D

It needs some TLC... Raven has informed me that the transmission main bearing is making noise. Believe it or not, I've already sourced all the bearings in the transmission, OEM from Subaru!! I dunno if I'm gonna rebuild this one and throw it back in, swap a different one, or what.

It also has an electrical issue with the fuel pump, so it will only run if I put a little gas in the carb. I heard it start up and then die, but the engine runs sweet, and the exhaust is completely silent!

It has all the original paperwork, owners' manual, etc. It's not even a 17-digit VIN either, it's something weird!

There's a tiny bit of rust, but only one spot that I'm concerned about. The rest is mostly surface.

Either way, it will be a fun project. I might restore it and sell it, or I might keep it.

Anyway, enough blabbering. Here's the pics of Gretchen (yes, I've already named her :D):

The body's dirty, but in decent shape:

Interior is kinda yucky:

This vicious beast might be putting out 60hp y0!!

Owner's manual, etc.

The one rust spot I'm concerned about:

Thanks again Raven!

I'm gonna do what I can to make it an original resto. Being fortunate enough to work at a Subaru dealer, I can probably do a little extra digging for OEM parts.

I think I'm gonna clean it up tomorrow, and see if I can at least get the engine to fire up and run for a few minutes.

I was thinking of throwing an EA81 D/R in it, but apparently that won't work, with the whole starter/clutch fork location being opposite of the EA81. I still find that really funny!

I guarantee I'm gonna have a whole bunch of questions coming up, since this is my first carbed car.

I do kinda hafta be a jackass and brag that I now have a legitimate reason to post in all 3 Subaru generation forums :D

an ea81 w/ dual range tranny can be adapted into it with some fabrication. not to much welding if i remember correctly. rooinator did a write up on this exact swap years ago.

i think you will probly like the ea71 motor though, it is no power house, but they almost always run. plus they are very fuel efficient, and the valves are easy to ajust if you got a tick going on. ea71s are also pretty easy to mod. get a weber carb on there along with a nice cam grind, high flow exhaust, and electronic disty swap, and that puppy would be pretty zippy:D

I'm impressed. It cleaned up pretty good. The paint is faded as hell, of course, but it looks better than I thought it would.

EA71 baby!

Too bad these aren't the real miles. It's likely rolled over, and the speedo's broken so even these 5 digits aren't accurate.

those 13 suggestions are probly good ones! i vote for an ej22 out of a pre 94 legacy (non interference) with a ea adapter plate, so you can connect it to a 5sp d/r:D that would be one sick unit:grin: you would have good power off road, and get 30 mpg on road with efficiency.

I'm just glad to see the ol girl go to a home where she'll be taken care of and restored like she should be. I know it wasnt the prettiest damn thing, but he's got one hell of a car sitting there, that wont take all that much work to get back to "pretty" condition. I've seen much much worse. Those that passed missed out.

Its kinda sad.. I pull back into my driveway out in the woods, and I immediately noticed the dirt patch that was left behind...glaring at me as I drove around to my spot in the back. Now, when I back out, I have no readily visible landmark to pivot around so I miss the shrubs and other plant life that my mother is trying desperately to grow and "make nice". I already miss my big blue lawn gnome. :-\

If you need some help with anything, now that I know where you live :lol: I could easily pop down and give you a hand. Plus, you could source me some OEM parts for the Brat on the cheap side that I would get raped on from the dealer up here. ;)

Keep the pics comin. Can never have too many posted. ;) Speaking of which, I must go out to the forest and make some more Brat porn sometime soon.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's one we've kicked around but never actually had....and might never have.

Sorry, just teasing and hoping to raise interest in an ACTUAL EAST COAST MEET on the Outer Banks (OBX) .

This year would be most difficult for me to make it.Perhaps a September run, maybe early October....but otherwise totally out of the question for me this summer.

Personally,I think it is THE PLACE for an "East of the Missisippi Meet" when we actually get enough interest.

Hey,tell ya what....I'll start a kick around thread for late Sept./early Oct. just to see who chimes in and the possibility of making even a small meet happen.

To me,just getting to OBX with my son or the whole family for camping, surf action is worth the effort. But I'd rather be there after tourist season when the weather is still excellent (excepting the occasional hurricane).

See you in the Meet 'n Greet....
