djkindt
Okay, I admit that I drive a '90 Justy. I am not ashamed. I have been toying with the idea of turbocharging it and had even written a post about it earlier. I hear a lot of people talking about their big plans for their justy project (i.e. engine swaps, lifting, turbo etc.) But I never see the finished product or even any of the process. Show 'em here please! I need more inspiration. Thanks, Dylan

Chris Rogers
I have an 84 model 4wd one (yes they do exist!) and I'm rebuilding it to new spec. only change is a Supercharged 700cc 4 pot and injection) original was a 993cc (EF10) I also have a smaller version of it (google subaru 700 or REX) as well. djkindt
That sounds pretty sweet! where did you get a motor like that? Do you have any pictures? I googled "Subaru Rex"... how cute I have an 84 model 4wd one (yes they do exist!) and I'm rebuilding it to new spec. only change is a Supercharged 700cc 4 pot and injection) original was a 993cc (EF10) I also have a smaller version of it (google subaru 700 or REX) as well. viehmann
OK....I have been working on two Justys (an 88 4WD and a 90 4WD 5door ECVT) I have done a few mods to them but, still have not been able to convert my 88 gen 1 justy to an FI turbo due to the lack of an FI parts car..or to be more specific.. a good FI block! I have the head, induction, and wire harness but, need a good bottom end so I can run the equal length axle shafts. Getting the right parts you need to build a Justy is 75% of the battle. I have 10 Justys (5 just for parts) and I still have to "Scrounge" for parts on occasion. Anyhow, If you want to see my Justys just look in the USMB photos section under my user name. If you need any Justy info just PM me and I'll help all I can. Hey...Anybody out there got a decent 90-94 FI Justy block they want to get rid of???? ....Yeah I know! It was worth a shot.. Jim Come on... out with it!
djkindt
Great! Thanks Jim. Are you planning on anything "custom" with your justys (besides the mpfi swap)?? That's crazy you have 10 justys and cannot find an engine block! Good luck, Dylan If you need any Justy info just PM me and I'll help all I can. ThreeEyedBandit
Hey...Anybody out there got a decent 90-94 FI Justy block they want to get rid of???? ....Yeah I know! It was worth a shot.. I just might be getting rid of mine , it already has the cylinders honed, and a hole drilled and tapped in the block for a oil return. Now the bad, it will need new balance shaft berings put in, and you live on the other side of the country. Matt
djkindt
I'm particularly interested in seeing turbo projects: -what have you done to prepare your motor for the turbo? -what are you using for fuel control? -how long has your engine lasted under boost? -Pictures?? ThreeEyedBandit
I'm particularly interested in seeing turbo projects:-what have you done to prepare your motor for the turbo? -what are you using for fuel control? -how long has your engine lasted under boost? -Pictures?? I was hoping to NOT have to buy an expensive system like megasquirt, but it looks like I might have to... 1. Preperation- a. I had both FI and carb. pistons and rods, so I chose the ones with the most dish then balanced the pistons and rods. Next came new rings. b. Cleaned up the head and removed all the sharp edges from the combustion chamber. Then cc'd the heads, and lapped the valves. c. Installed a IAT sensor in the plenum, see below. d. Drilled and tapped hole in block between cyl. 1 & 2 right above the oil pan. Removed the most of the balance shaft and installed the rear bearing so that the oil passage was blocked. e. Installed new main and rod bearings, and found the best of two oil pumps. New water pump and clutch also. f. Installed an actual TPS for the engine management(yet again see below). 2. Fuel System- a. Broke the engine in on the stock computer for around 1100 miles. b. The first time I ran the engine I used Megasquirt n' Spark without the spark control so that I could have warning light and stuff like that. It required the IAT sensor(regular GM) in the plenum and just the stock coolant sensor. I really liked the way the car ran, and how easy it was to tune until it came to leaning out the on boost side of the map(engine ran really strong and just didn't have time to tune it until it happened. After about 4400 mile of being turboed the engine developed a very very strange knock and wouldn't make boost. Opon further inspection found that the compressor shaft had broken, and the turbine impeller was just dancin' in the exhaust snail. So that pretty much sucked, so everything not stock was removed and the car was put back together in stock trim. Since the Megasquirt was removed and I had a ER-27 and 84 GL wagon that became my new project for a while. After about 4 months I came across another turbo and the bug hit me again. This time I ran the factory computer and it pretty much hated boost over 3 psi. but I ran it again until the cam pulley came free from the cam and the car yet again was parked for even longer. It is just now getting a JDM engine installed and will be ran in stock trim for who knows how long. It turns out that both times oil pressure, or a lack of killed both turbos. 3. How long did it last? a. I would say about 5500 miles but the internals looked like they had absolutly no problems with the boost, but the oil delivery was the problem both time. 4. Pictures? a. I do have pictures of the setup but will need to post them later. Just spend the money on the Megasquirt as it will be the best thing you can buy for it(other than a new oil pump), and I will give you my maps, and temp sensor files. Just-Y
Well I have had a few plans for one of my justys I found an rx-7 with a 13-b rotary and am about to start cuttong suspension from under an 88 justy had originally planned on doing it to my 94 justy but soon found that FI justys are hard to come by , so the carbied one will be less of a crime incase I fail , I really want that twin turbo 13-B wankel in that lil car it would be quite a gas ! but at the same time a 400 hp 2.5 sooby motor from metric motors is equally as tempting though I am not sure about tranny and drive train , though metric motors are completly stand alone engines plug in the gas and the power wire in a key and go .... I may be taking another 88 from a friend of mine a putting the body on my lifted but rolled over samurai it would be cool to see what looked like a justy sitting on 36 inches of rubber though with my wife back in school I think the financial bottom just dropped out of these pipe dreams ... now I am left just sitting here looking for a good fi block for my 94 so I can once again cruise my baby ( had it since 1996 ) it was my first car has 1 million 144 thousand on the odometer
djkindt
Thanks Matt! I'm very anxious to see the pictures of your setup! you can post them, or email them to me if you'd like: djkindt@hotmail.com So do you think if you had a new oil pump then the turbo would have survived? Anything that might help me out would be greatly appreciated. I'm ready to start on this thing, except I can't afford megasquirt right now (college student). But I'm savin' up and will hopefully be able to soon. Thanks again! Hey Just-Y, Good luck with your quest! yeah, a twin turbo rotary would pretty sweet in any car... even a rx7! Just-Y
lol the 13-b wankel rotary is what came in the rx-7 I have one that hit a pole it5 was a savanna edition and had twin upgraded turbos although they are t-3 hybrid with p-52 trim wheel though not a tottal buff on turbos I have been told that there will too much turbo lag and that whoever set it up must not of known exactly what they were doing I am going to be attempting to put it in the 88 justy just to royally annoy the honda civics , accords and all the other rice mobiles , just for entertainment factor he he hee I think it would be really fun if I could get it together and leave the justy stock looking and muffle the crap out of it so that no one would even relise that it had been modded \ just the look on thos little rice lovers faces when they got hammered by a justy would be worth any amount of hours invested .... ok and because I LOVe the justy dont know why I love them so much ... ah but what the heck I do so rock on

Chris Rogers
That sounds pretty sweet! where did you get a motor like that? Do you have any pictures? I googled "Subaru Rex"... how cute out of a later subaru rex - 1990 model. as for injection (mine) it runs a modified 1227808 ( or '165) delco ECU from a GM passenger car. in your case you don't really have a choice. yours has to be aftermarket. mega squirt is crap in opionion. look at:wolf 3d , microtech, haltech, motec. google any of those. djkindt
Sounds like a pretty cool setup Chris. As for megasquirt being crap: That's the first negative thing I've heard about it. Have you had any problems with it? Right now I'm having a hard time affording even that system, so buying a $1000 engine management (like the ones you mentioned) is probably not going to happen right now... I can dream though! out of a later subaru rex - 1990 model. as for injection (mine) it runs a modified 1227808 ( or '165) delco ECU from a GM passenger car. in your case you don't really have a choice. yours has to be aftermarket. mega squirt is crap in opionion. look at:wolf 3d , microtech, haltech, motec. google any of those. malamute
Hey...Anybody out there got a decent 90-94 FI Justy block they want to get rid of???? ....Yeah I know! Jim Willing to trade for a good 90 to 94 3-door body? I need a road trip to N.C.! I have to get my new house done before I can work on any project car. Hopefully in the summer I can start the build of the motor. I am still toying with the idea of either a 323 GTX transmission or a Toyota All-trac unit. And in case you were wondering you can ship a Justy block UPS. It weighs 69 pounds. Matthew Bos

I can dream though! yep it works. there is a software package out here called Kalmaker. takes the std prom, recalibrates it and away you go. as for the engine mgt systems they are all locally made and race proven. the last megasquirt unit I saw didn't impress me as it did little more than drive an injector. at least with the GM systems it can be tuned with a stable idle. 1227165 is out of a 85-88 camaro or sunbird - if you go this route grab everything hanging off the ECU. if you are crafty remake that harness. it will only work on 4 cyl cars though. djkindt
So I'm soo close to starting on my turbo project. I just have to bite the bullet and buy a megasquirt system (I've been hoping there are other ways, but it seems like this would just be a good investment) So I have: -RHB5 Turbo -Audi Intercooler -Boost Gauge -WRX hood scoop:brow: -Gtech Pro Competion What I need: -Megasquirt -Injectors? -intercooler/turbo piping -oil cooler what I have questions about: -Manual boost controller? Seems like a good idea, but it also seems like something you could assemble at a hardware store instead of paying $30 for one on ebay... -see anything I am obviously missing?? Thanks guys!
