Eastern NY, Western MA: Old Horse & Buggy Trails?

Had a little adventure with Yahoo Maps/Mapquest the other day... planned a trip from Albany, NY to Pittsfield, MA. YM decided to send me on a "shortcut" over a good sized hill/mountain rather than take me along Route 20 into Pittsfield proper. As a result, I ended up taking the Geekmobile with all its 3" of ground clearance up a "dead end" road that progressively degraded into a washed out gravel trail. The neighbor that came out to check on me mentioned something about it being a 1890's horse & buggy trail between New Lebanon and Pittsfield.

I checked the topo maps on terraserver.microsoft.com, and located the road... there's that "unmaintained but public" dashed line extending from the road (Old Mountain Road, btw). There's a couple more throughout the hills, too. The neighbor had mentioned something about it being mostly washed out, along with the potentially huge obstacle of a beaver pond being located in the middle of the road towards the top... this got my curiousity going.

Anybody know anything the area, and whether it'd be worth looking into for exploration purposes? :)

Seems to me there is no real question about the trail!

The only real issue is when?:burnout:

If I was there, I'd be planning an exploration trip with you:rolleyes:

Now I'd just have to figure out which Subaru to take.....

Good Luck,

Glenn
