I have a 95 legacy awd with auto transmission. In the process of replacing some clunky drive axles I noticed play in the drivers side stub axle(where the axle connects to the transmission). I have read many comments on this, but have not seen any way to fix the play. I am concerned as I have noticed another clunk from the drivers side when I start moving. Am also concerned that there is some vibration from this play at higher speeds.

Questions:

What does the axle stub sit in?

How does this develop play?

Can be repaired without tearing down the transmission?

What kind of damage is this doing to the transmission?

Any guesses on how long before it all comes apart?

Thanks - th

the stub shaft has a circlip on the end inside the transmission. with enough effort it just pulls out of the transmission with the retaining clip still on the stubby shaft. same goes for reinstalling it, press it in and the circlip will snap in place and hold it.

not sure where any play would come from or how that would happen but there is certainly no easy way to address it except to say that maybe a new stubby shaft and circlip may help. disassembly of the front differential is not an easy task.

do to the differential set up, i wonder if one axle stub could by design have more play than the other. technically speaking only one wheel receives power when driving, so maybe there's a difference in play associated with that as well. i don't know, but if i remember or if someone wants they can check a spare trans. off the top of my head i've never noticed one side being more loose than the other.

The stub shafts are splined into differential side gears. The play is probably between the stub and the gear. Another possibility is loose diff. bearings but that would probably be giving you more serious trouble. FWIW, the factory manual says to use new C-clips when reinstalling the shafts, but I understand they were never removed.
