popeye2
2001 OBW, 2.5l I just had the left head gasket replaced under the Subaru Extended Warranty (w/addition of coolant additive). I have read that the timing belt tensioner has been problematic on this engine and that there had been a TSB in regards to it. I asked the advisor to change the timing belt tensioner at my cost while the engine was tore down, a snafu occured such that it wasn't replaced. The tech said that even though I wanted it replaced, the original was fine, and no need to worry. Just what is the story on the timing belt tensioner? Is it's operation dependent on the internal oil pressure?
Subie Gal
i dont know of a TSB for the tensioner but they are most certainly a "replace as is necessary" item most will replace the tensioner when they do their timing belt as a precautionary maintenance not something that HAS to be done... if your tech stated tensioner is "okay" i'd believe em.... 2X2KOB
I have heard people say that the tensioner should be changed with every *other* timing belt change unless it's bad. That's my plan anyway.
