excessive clacking noise after long storage

My '89 wagon (EA82 SPFI) has been sitting for a couple of months. I fired it up today and it's making a LOT of clacking noise... it was not doing this two months ago when it was my daily driver.

 

checked oil, its full.

 

not sure when the last time the valve lash was checked, I'll try that and see what happens.

 

is it possible that a seal of some kind has dried up in the oil pump from beeing in storage for so long?

 

anyone with similar situation? advice? gracias!

Valve adjusters are hydraulic - cannot adjust them.

 

Lifters bleed down after a long storage - very common. Officially subaru says up to two hour of operation for all air to bleed out of the lifters.

 

Replaceing the oil pump is definately a good thing - just replaceing the seals is not generally enough in my experience - and if I'm going to all the trouble, an extra $60 is acceptable to me.

Hey Dood..dont touch a thing..it will clear up as soon as it gets all nice and warm...theres no point checking valve lash as its not adjustable..the lifters will get oil soon enough and the noise will disappear...this is normal.cheers:)

agreed, I've had a few that had been stored for a while (and mine, when the crank angle sensor went out and I couldn't figure it out, lots of cold cranking in cold weather with no spark....), an oil change and a little MMO (marvel mystery oil) couldn't hurt. What I do, is make sure the oil is good, and the pressure is good, then start it, and leave it alone for awhile. I bet you it will go away after awhile.
