Gas Mileage on Impreza Outback 2006

Hi everyone,

I just bought my first Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2006 last month and the gas mileage is not what I'd expected. Subaru says the car should be doing 23/28 and I'm only getting 17 at best doing 50% in the city, 50% highway.Right now I only have 700 miles on the car and I was until last week using the cheapest gas. So my question is , Am I going to see a significant improvement once the car has been broken in ( as I was told by a couple people ), is this a common thing on a new car to do poor gas mileage for the first 2000 miles or so and finaly what can I do to improve this situation.

Try not to use the offbrand gas. Try some "namebrand" (Chevron, Shell) and report back. If you are doing Lombard street every morning on the way to work you will get poor mileage. All those hills and city stop and go will definitely kill it.

Nice buy, I think that is what we also call the 'Gravel Express' elsewhere? I'd buy good fuel, and take it easy for the first couple of thou' (I'm sure you are). The engine will take time to wear in, and there are right and wrong ways to drive a new engine. And make that first oil change earlier rather than later.

I think you should do a bit better, but not a lot. I live in San Mateo and drive in SF pretty frequently. My Forester averages around 25 normally. In the City a lot and I'm lucky to see 18.

Just a thought that maybe you might wanna try filling at another station. I wonder sometimes if low mileage is occasionally attributable to station owners "fixing" the pumps. e.i. reads 10 gallons, but actually delivers 9, etc.
