Blown upper radiator hose, what else to replace?

Recommended Posts

So I pulled of the interstate this morning and noticed steam coming from under the hood. I pulled into a parking lot and found that my upper radiator hose had a nice crack in it! Coolant everywhere!!!

So after my last coolant hose incident (see link) I'm ready to rebuild the whole she-bang.

I'm going to do upper and lower rad hoses, 2 heater hoses, radiator, and what else? I'll check out the PITA hose under the A/C compressor, I know if I don't replace it'll go next, so we'll see on that one. Should I do the coolant temp sensor by the thermosat and the thermoswitch on the radiator too? Any other hoses or cooling system components I'm missing? I'm going to wait to do the water pump till replace the t-belts, accessory belts, oil pump & seals, and cam seals.

A compression test is probably in order as well, got my fingers crossed that my head gaskets are intact!

Although it's good to know what your compression is, I doubt that you did any damage to the HGs or the heads. It sounds like you're replacing all the hoses. You might want to check the condition of the accessory drive belts as well.

You'll probably want to check for any play in the water pump also. Depending on how long it was run without water, the bearings could have been toasted.

Just pull up/down, left/right on the fan and feel for any movement. There shouldn't be any at all.

thermostat yes. thermoswitch and coolant temp sensors rarely fail. the connectors get corroded and cause issues, but the sensors very rarely fail. i'd leave them.

on some models i believe there is a very small hose under the alternator (at least on the XT6), it's about center of the top of the motor. replace the hose and clamps on this one. have to make the hose longer than stock if you don't use a pre-bent hose for this one.

there is also a hose at the throttle body, i completely removed it so as not to heat up the air intake. less hoses and clamps as well. route the hose wherever it goes, i forget. depends what intake you have where or if you have this one.

not terribly hard to swing the a/c compressor out of the way for easier access to the hose under there if you like. unbolt it and wedge some 2x's underneath to hold it out of the way. it has enough play to move around a bit.

I picked up a Upper Rad Hose from Napa and refilled with coolant and made it home. On my way I picked up a used radiator from Roos Only for $60. I got the lower rad hose, 2 heater hoses, and 1 more hose from Napa. So I drained the coolant, pulled the rad and hoses and started to inspect and play. The accessory belts were acceptable, but will need to be changed. And no play in the waterpump shaft, thanks for the tip hoozie!

I pulled the timimg belt covers while I was there, the belts looked good, so I left them be for the time being. I tried to get at the PITA hose under the A/C compressor, but long story short, it remains there, hopefully I'll get at it when the timing belts and oil and water pump get changed.

Now for the radiator. Roos only told me it came off a 90 Loyale, Auto, Turbo. When I compared them it was noticeable thicker, I don't want to say dual core, but beefier, were the turbo rads bigger? When I put it in it was about 1/2 inch taller, so the mounting bolts didn't line up. I pulled it back out, and switched the rubber mounting gromments on the bottom with the original radiator. Put it back in and it still wouldn't line up. I spent most of the time trying to line up the radiator, but it still was about a half inch off. I pulled the gromments off and it lined up perfectly, the bottom of the rad has a little play, but nothing that is too concerning to me.

Test drive was great, temp gauge never hit above 1/4. I flipped on the a/c and ran on the highway and in town with stop and go and it never got above half!!! I went from Denver to Boulder and back for the Memorial Day weekend, with and without the a/c, and she was cool as a cucumber!!! I'll keep my eye on the coolant level to make sure it's full and not using any.
