soobme
OK, I just got a set of 80W low/100W high bulbs for the turbo so I have some general Q's 1) Is there a headlight relay? If so where is it? 2) Any one els using these? Any problems with the wireing, switch ect.? I did the math, with the lights on High I will be pulling just under 19amps@11volts(siting @stop light in the dark with heater and raido on=11 volts) I wouldn't think that it would hurt any thing, but U never know:eh:
TROGDOR!
Watch out! You may melt your headlight wiring harness! I know this was a common problem in some other cars running overwattage 9004's. If you really want to run the high-watt bulbs, APC I think makes a kit that will beef up your wiring.
JWX
I run some upgraded ones in my rolla and nothing bad has happend yet and those are 9004's. I'm not sure of the spec's on them but there better than stock and blue, and at idle with the blower motor up and the radio on it dims a bit. but that might be my Alt. Will be about a 15mn. drive, and then I will check the harness(if I don't pop a fuse 1st:eh: ) to see if it's hot, more so than usual.:cornfuzz:
bbbs53
I run them in all my cars except the '82. Even the Gen 1's. I made a new harness out of real wire and radio shack 30 amp relays. The wire from the headlight switch for low beams goes to one relay leg, the ground to one and I ran a hot right off the back of the alt, the other to the light, no dimming. Put a ground on each side. Did the same with the high beam side, another relay, and both are on high or low, depending on switch position. I put a 30 amp in line fuse holder on the hot lead to the relay's from the alt. then new plugs with real wire from napa for a Ford f-150. Now I have lights. The only one I haven't figured out yet is the '82 single light. I will find a source for the shell and it will have the 85/120's off road only on each side. I live in the sticks and street legal is not an issue. If someone out there knows where to obtain the proper size square holder, let me know and I do apoligize for the hijack. Hondasucks
GEt on ebay and get a harness kit, it plugs into your existing harness but adds thicker wire and two relays, look for an H4 or 9004 harness kit.
edrach
Competition Limited in Pinckney, MI sells wiring harnesses to upgrade your existing unit to use the higher wattage bulbs. Ask for Gene and tell him I sent you. Also, has good prices on various bulbs and stuff. He's been selling to the Pro Rally crowd for over 25 years. soobme
Well, I put them in, and no fuse poping or hot wires. Boy do I have light now! It's not "get U a ticket" bright, so long as they are adjusted right and are on low beam. But if the adjustment was off I'd be in trouble:eek: The slight blue tint to the light helps out alot too. I may still up-grade the harness @ a later date, but for now it's working great;)
edrach
Sometime when you have the opportunity, measure the voltage across the bulbs when they are on and compare it to the voltage at the battery terminals. The difference in voltage is how much you loose in the old wiring and switches. You can increase the voltage by going to a harness and relays. Another 1/2 volt at the bulbs results in more light output.
