subnz
EA71 / EA81 79 to 84 JDM for Leone 2nd gen. EA71 / EA82 84 to 93 JDM for Leone 3rd gen. (then since 94 Impreza with EJ engines) EA71 78 to 81 NZDM for Brat 1st gen. (last of 1st gen in 81 had EA81+MT D/R) EA81 82 to 94 NZDM for Brat 2nd gen. Understand that USDM dates a year behind in some cases, and the Brat was discontinued in US in late 80's? .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Leone Surely Subaru USA has a database to find out about its (year) history (engine number ) if USDM. jono
jf3au5 6/89 build got ea81 882505 [now deceased - autopsy looks like minimal oil/young boy driver with tacho ] Forgot I even posted this up !! OK, no one has mentioned that some EA81 blocks did not have the extra 14mm hex keyed plug at the front of the distributor side block - into the water jacket? I have one without the plug or threaded hole. The crank that went with it did not have the space at the back behind the flywheel for that oh so pricey orang seal/washer/whatever it is meant to be. Came out od my 3/84 sedan auto 074839 for a jan 92 made EA81 Brumby , suspect it sounds like hydro ?? 604825 for 3/84 EA81 this one has the no room for seal on crank or the water plug at front 882505 for 6/89 EA81 Edited January 9, 2014 by jono

Dinky26
So after reading all these posts I'm fairly certain I have a very early EA81. Gold stickers on valve covers saying 'Don't adjust Valve Clearance' Hydro lifters I am guessing Serial # on block 002766 With a NiiponDenso dizzy Oh On a 86 Brat with build date 12/85. Tims Toy 500
Here is my dilemma: I ordered tune up parts and got the wrong ones... The original owner replaced the engine back in '98. Using GeneralDisorder's break down, my engine is pre-81 or post 85. I don't have magical golden stickers on the (blue) valve covers or the previously mentioned 10mm bolts on the bottom of the heads. My Engine # is 889710. It does have a single grove pully. Any idea what my engine came out of?

PleiadesUnited
I'd love to play, but before I do I'm having serious concerns my car was factory turbo. 1983 wagon turbo auto, MAF has "83 turbo" written on it, transmission has "84 turbo" written on it, I have no "turbo 4x4" decal on the side and when I looked up a list of trouble codes, it said 1983 carb and 1984+ Injected and my '83 is injected. Anybody know of a way I can make sure it's turboed from the factory? I'd rather not spend money on a car fax just to figure this out. Once I do I'll post my numbers. Thx!!
