New Subie Owner

Recommended Posts

Hi, my name is Kevin and I am from Minneapolis, MN. I graduated from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus a few weeks ago with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Plant Biology. My first car ever was a 1995 Dodge Stratus ES which I purchased for $2800 a little over 2 years ago. She had 80k when I bought it (107k now), 2.5L V6 4-sp auto, and since then I've dropped about 4 grand into her and she has turned out to be a really nice car - looks good and runs great. I am a member of stratusphere.net if anyone has heard of it, it is an online group dedicated to 1st gen and 2nd gen cloud cars - Dodge Stratus, Chrysler Cirrus, and Plymouth Breeze, along with somewhat of a following of Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring owners. I'll get my cardomain updated on my Strat really soon, when I get a few hours to upload pics. This past week I came upon a deal I couldn't pass up...1989 Subaru GL wagon, 1.8L n/a, 5sp, on-the-fly 4wd. Here is the URL: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/car/164286818.html $800 cash, I'm gonna pick it up within a week or two. I wanted to get it for a winter beater up here, since the MN winters wreak havoc on auto bodies. She will also come in nice for hunting, fishing, and hauling stuff around too, as you can see with the paint job. I don't know too much about these cars, but I know they are mechanically built like tanks - to last for the long run - and I know generally how to fix cars and keep them running. Thanks for the welcome to these boards. Any advice/suggestions are appreciated. I would also like to find a good Chilton/Haynes repair manual for my new Soob, so some recommendations would be nice. Thanks again.

Welcome to the board!

I didn't know anybody cared about the "cloud cars".

But then again, everybody else probably does not know anyone cares about old Subarus either?

Subies are great cars, I think you'll enjoy owning your new wagon.

Tanks that are made out of bad steel. Rust is our worst enemy. But it should last you a while to come. Hope you enjoy it, and this wonderful forum... Not a idiot in sight (most days)...

hey, welcome to the insanity!!

Love the paintjob on your new toy!! LOL:headbang: with only 150k on the clock, she has a looonnnngg life ahead of her if you can manage to keep the rust gremlins at bay - my 89 wagon has 232k and counting, and there are others that have hit well over 300k...

Find out when the timing belts were last done, if possible - that seems to be an item that is frequently overlooked. If it is in need of them, they are pretty easy to do...and plenty of good info here.

Enjoy the new wagon!!:D

that car looks nice, i hope you enjoy it, but first check its belts and oil pump presure if it is too low, the engine becomes noisy because of the hydraulic lifters. it hapened to mine about one year ago. believe me, subaru GL (Called Leone here, Loyale at United States) is a wonderful unique car, you will learn using it.

Yeah, I bought my '91 Loyale as a Winter Beater. It's turned into my Daily Driver! And if I ever get bored, I have something to Tinker with. There's ALWAYS something that wants/needs attention on these cars. And being so easy to work on, it really builds your confidence up quickly.
