SUBARU3
Ok....what is the solution for the leaky 4WD/4 speed shifter shaft on Gen 1s?? I park facing downhill to limit the leak. My transmission is fine except for this leak. Does the case need to be split to fix this? Is there actually a seal there?? Opinions? It seems like a common issue. moosens
I'm looking at my FPM and from what I can see there's a seal on that lateral shaft,"rail 3" (shifter fork).Looks like the seal sets into the case from the rear side of the boxy rise in the case. There's a squarish flat cover on the topside held down by 4 Philips screws. Seal p/n I'm talking about is/was 8067 12050 for 4WD wagon and Brat only. Rock 'n roll my brother!:-p
SUBARU3
So this can be replaced without splitting the case? Through the top access plate? I assume the trans would need to be removed though. Todd
moosens
The exploded view shows it setting in from the rear, outside. BUT,you'll have to pop the lid mentioned above and remove the shifter rail by means of first removing the shifter fork.....from looking at the drawing. Shifter fork is retained by a 5 x 22 straight pin.Four Philips screws and a tiny punch and hammer, then the seal is yours for the picking. Todd,if you score that seal, can you please snag one for me too? Thanks! Seal size -12 x 22 x 5 Talk to you soon.

Todd Todd, Did this ever get resolved? And did you do it your self? Mine is leaking bad too, Have to leave tranny like half full to not have it leak like crazy. -Daniel

O.C.D.
In for answer as I have my EA71 trans torn apart. I see the 4WD selector shaft seal - it is about an inch wide. Is this the same seal that is on the gear selector shaft?
