El Toro
I have a problem on my 86 gl (go figure) . My pin that holds back the fuel door was snapped off by the previous owner and I was thinking about taking the door off all together and putting on one of those aftermarket lock/tap to open doors like you see on some trucks. i found a few on e-bay, napa-online and such but they are all for specific trucks like dodge or hummer. Has any one done this, and if so where did you get the new fuel door?
daeron
i would imagine it would be simpler to just buy a keylock, drill a hole in the subaru door, and put it on there.. it would require removing the stock latch mechanism to give the latch a place to latch, but to MY thinking that would be the simplest route. you should be able to find a cabinet-type lock that should work, i would think.. El Toro
good idea! that would be simple. sorta like a lock box key set up. i might do that if i cant find some after-market application that will work. thanks for the help!
daeron
one thing to keep in mind.. the type of lock im talking about is gonna have a catch at right angles to the lock cylinder, to slide into a slot or groove in the jamb of the door, right?? so picture this.. to achieve a tight, snug fit, the slot in the doorjamb needs to be angled a bit so that as you rotate the lock, the catch pulls itslef tighter to the body of the car. the could also be achieved with a flat slot in the doorjamb, and a bent tab on the lock catch.. but you need to visualize the point im making to ensure that the thing doesnt flap in the wind, yanno? im trying to draw a picture with words.. the concept is simple, but i dont know if ive been abundantly clear in my description. stumpy
My pin that holds back the fuel door was snapped off by the previous owner. I have the same problem with an 87GL wagon. Keep up posted as to what works out easiest. Stumpy
El Toro
Yes i see what your getting at. I think the straight hole withe the bump would be the easiest way. today I'm swinging by home depot to look for locks. i will let you know how it turns out. mdjdc
Why don't you just go to a junk yard and get a new fuel door cable and replace it? I have two donor cars that I could get one from if you have trouble finding a JY with a sub in it.

Sounds like alot less work and easier to do. nipper
El Toro
well i ultimately decided to just replace the latch/pin mechanism instead of a hole new fuel door. sadly i could not find a door with a small enough opening device that i could recess in to the fuel door area. if i ever find one small enough i might just consider doing it anyways.
