Tosh
I just bought my wagon on the 9th and its already out of commission. Clutch is burned to a crisp, one CV joint is completely shot and the other is gonna be joining it soon. It seems the plan is to pull the motor and replace the clutch. I've got another truck thats got a few miles left in it that I can use for a daily driver so there is SOME time for work to be done. So besides whats broken Clutch and CV's anything else I should be looking to replace ? most of its miles are going to be on mild dirt 4x4 and a lot of snow miles so winter prep is gonna be really important. I was thinking about doing the XT6 swap on the clutch to give it a little something extra in the clutch department. Can anyone give me any price estimates on how much for a XT6 flywheel or to get my EA82T one machined ? I don't know the exact history on the motor but should I be looking to do a timing chain possibly while the motor is out ? is there any bad side to doing one at 40k ? Like I said most of the iffy situations I'm gonna be in are gonna be winter ones. Anything in particular that I can do to make sure the wagon is gonna start after sitting in the snow for 8-9 hours when I go snowboarding? also I've been considering a 1-2" lift something that would give me a little bit of extra clearance but not make it look like a hard core swap beast, IE still looks respectable around town. Can I get a small lift like that "safely" being the key word with just springs ?

Turbone
Along with what Nipper mentioned above (2 timing belts, btw) if your wagon is a GL-10, you should have adjustable suspension. If not, you should have at least adj front struts. Look for 2 bolts on either side of the bottom strut plate. There are 2 nuts that can be turned to raise the front f the car. If your lucky and have the adj rear shocks, you need a spring compressor to adj those. But they have 3 different levels.
Tosh
how can I tell if I have ajustable rear suspension ? what would I look for the same 2 bolts ?
desertsubaru
how can I tell if I have ajustable rear suspension ? what would I look for the same 2 bolts ? The back coil overs that can be adjusted have a nothched ring on the bottom that twist around the shock. Very similar to back motorcycle shocks. There is a tool for it but i just use 18 inch channel locks. jack car up( put on jack stands) remove wheel grab ring with plyers and twist ring to desired height. Remember your rear cv joints could ware faster. I have had mine up for three years now and no problems there. But since my shocks are shot i ware the inside of my tires out in six months. Tosh
I'll have to check it out tomorrow (the doom wagon couldn't make it all the way to my house so its chillin at a friends) but hopefully I can avoid lifting with that. how do these prices look for everything I might not have the cash to do it all while its out so if you guys want to help me pick and choose that would be great. Water pump $60 hoses $30 oil pump $200 Oil pan gasket $13 timing belt - Duralast $160 Gatorback $195 I'm also looking at getting GCK axles I'm just getting one to replace my broken one at this moment but I'd like to get all 4 coverd and plus if I save 1 front and one rear I have a spair of something goes wrong. I'm also looking at a GL-10 clutch vs a XT6 clutch, I'll obviously be resurfacing the flywheel while its out.
GeneralDisorder
Those are some very expensive parts. Even the dealership is under $100 (in fact I think it was under $80) for both timing belts, and oil pumps are about $65 from discount import around here (OEM part).... I think my dealer quoted me like $120 for one. Last time I got a pan gasket it was about $8 (dealer only on this one, all others are inferior). GCK - good choice, and no core so you keep you old ones for spares. They don't make rear's tho. Rear's are rebuildable, so get the parts from rockford CV and build them yourself..... but then again if you are stock height they will probably never fail. At least I've never seen it unless a boot was torn. XT6 clutch - I wouldn't think that neccesary, but up to you I suppose. In fact I'm not totally sure there is any difference in the clutch itself - the flywheel on the XT6 is lighter by quite a bit tho. If anything the pressure plate may be stronger, but it's really hard to say. Aftermarket may be the same part. GD
TheSubaruJunkie
These are some good timing belts: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1986-1994-Subaru-1-8-GL-DL-Loyale-Timing-Belt-Kit_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33625QQitemZ8075637336QQrdZ1 Everything you need. I used this setup on my RX when i built the motor, and you cant beat the price. Alot of other board members have used this kit without any problems. -Brian

You can repack the bearings in the idler and tensioners, and usually reuse them - especially if you are running sans-covers. GD
