$J-MoNeY-$ Posted October 31, 2003 Share Posted October 31, 2003 Howdy guys/gals. Im new to the board but have been a subaru addict ever since I've started driving. Im on my 10th subaru right now. I had a 86 3 door hatchback:with many mods including, a 1st gen DSM intercooler. At this time I found my baby and plan on doing this one right. I have a 88 Subaru GL: 5speed,push button 4WD,1.8T,red,wagon. Im so glad I found this website, cause NASIOC was just not too intune with these old school stuff. I'm making an intake right now and am having some problems with the hot wire type MAFS. I had the vane style on my 86 and that didn't react to my PVC pipe intake so drastically. I think I have the problem isolated to that the bend in the intake pipe is to extreme and is casing the MAFS to give bad readings due to "turbulent"air. Does this sound about right to your guys? With the boost pressure set at 10 psi you will experience fuel cut if you hold it at this pressure for more than several seconds. As to answer you question on turbulent air and a confused MAF output signal, well I guess it could happen but I ran a blunt 90 degree intake adapter for thousands of miles with no problem. I have since moved my K&N into the inner fender (between the inner fender and plastic inner fender liner) area and have a straight shot. The problem is when I get on the gas and get the at above 3grand in RPMS then it begins to chug or feels like it cuts out. How can I be rid of this problem? It seems that I must deal with this electronically, since I have a 88 or newer car. On my 86 I just pluged off a black film canister looking thing and she ran great. I for one dont know anything about the Subaru working end but I drive mine and play hard and Chef Tim fixes them for me... soobme Posted October 31, 2003 Share Posted October 31, 2003 Are U @ 10psi of boost by 3000RPM? If so I would say it's the fuel cut off sys. Is it only when U get on it hard that this hapens, or even when U are drivin' it eazy? I know I can get mine up to 11-12psi by 3000RPM EAZY! Skip Posted October 31, 2003 Share Posted October 31, 2003 J, The "chugging"? Is it constant above 3 grand or a on/off type of feel? Where is the air fuel meter sitting when this happens? Have you tried resetting the boost to below 8 and trying it ? If it is going lean when it chugs I'd suspect a partially plugged fuel filter. Possibly dirty injectors. Hondasucks Posted October 31, 2003 Share Posted October 31, 2003 Check your MAF, I know on my 87 Turbowagon if I unplug the MAF it won't rev over 3500 RPM. Your MAF could be toast and your computer is in "limp mode" The MAF is the sensor that is attached to your air cleaner box, you still have that sensor right??
