Overheat issue

Recommended Posts

I just dropped another EA-82 in my 85 wagen. This one has half the KM.'s of the previous engine but I have a cooling issue.

On the hottest day of the summer I brought my wagen home for the first time with her temp. skirting just below the red. I already pulled the thermostat.

Is this the electronic fan? It doesnt seem to come on when the engine is hot. Is this fan part of the A/C? Anyone ever bypass to make it manual switch?

Should I flush the rad?

Thanks

The electric fan has a thermoswitch that usually comes on around 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up the temp gauge. AC doesnt have anything to do with the fans on these cars. Yes a lot of people have bypassed the switch. Its fairly easy to do. IIRC the fan has constant power and the thermo switch controls the ground (might be the other way around, but check it with a multimeter just to make sure)

search around the board and you'll find a diagram

I bypassed the thermo switch on my car entirely.. the connecter for the fan is right next to the thermoswitch on the radiator (passengerside). Wire in some 14g from the fan output to a switch and viola.. connect to battery or another power source and a good ground and your set.. add a inline fuse and use a 20amp or greater switch.

just make sure you remember to turn it on everytime.. I don't let other people drive my car for this reason..

I don't think EA82 radiators are grounded, because many have plastic tanks. At least mine isn't grounded. The thermoswitch has two leads on it instead of the one on EA81. This means the thermoswitch completes a circuit instead of grounding it.

I was having overheat problems recently, replaced the radiator and even with the A/C on and going up hill it dosen't even get past half scale. The original radiator was a single core and the new one a dual core. Radiator Barn got it to me next day at a very good price, $134. Made all the difference.
