4x4_Welder
I have a good fix for that. I replaced my stock strap-mount pedal assembly with the better spring-clip mount. I bought the bare pedal mount for an 84 Hatch from the dealership, it was in the $70 range, the original pedals and shaft went right on it. The cable is for an 84 Brat, Napa p/n 615-1745, $35. Now if only the previous owner would have done this, I wouldn't have to replace the tranny-
GeneralDisorder
DOH! The cable from the dealer is like $13 - maybe as much as $17 if you have a crappy dealer. It should also be mentioned that this is only a problem on the 80-83 EA81's that have the older style clutch cable mounting. Might be helpful if you posted pictures of the difference.... 4x4_Welder
In all honesty, I looked at the cable from the dealer, and the one from Napa is actually a bit stouter, and about a half inch longer. Plus, Napa got it for me the next day, the only one the dealer had was a special order that somebody was coming in for. The dealer said a week, I know from my dealings with them on other parts, I'd be waiting at least another couple days. Here's a crappy pic I took with my junk camera. I straightened, welded, and reinforced the old one, but the angle made the cable bind and bent the thin steel there again. In hunting around in the junkyards looking for a replacement early assembly, I took a look at a couple EA82s- looks like that assembly would be a bolt in on the EA81 as well, you might loose the plastic dash bottom since it didn't look like it had a clip to hold it in place. I had issues of the clutch slipping at times, and was thinking the PP was weak. Maybe it was just the cable binding and not letting it engage properly. The BRAT is gutted right now, and I have an assembly out of an '86 BRAT. Might as well, eh.
4x4_Welder
It never caused engagement issues on mine, but the clutch does seem to engage faster now. If the assembly is bent, then it should be replaced. Yeah, this was from Peninsula. They quoted me $60 for the assembly at first, but it was more when I went to get it.
