I need an air conditioner

Plumbed for air? What do you mean? It has everything but the compressor?

 

Generally speaking, all the roos had a "equipped for installation of optional AC" badge in the cabin, but you still need all the wireing, relays, extra radiator fan, compressor and bracket, evaporator, condensor, drier, and all the plumbing bits.... then you must remove the dash to install the condensor....

Okay..so I am a victim or the sticker fraud! That being said...I need a car with air. Any thoughts on how much to get all the bits and pieces ( I do the work myself). Also...if I wanted to sell an 84 GLF in Winnipeg with 118 000 original KMs...what should I ask? Everything is stock and works perfectly.

Originally all the bits came as a "kit" that the dealership would install. I'm sure it was not cheap. The real problem is not really getting the parts, it's getting the *right* parts and figureing out the wireing. Most of the AC systems you will find were factory installed, not dealer - as such they are not quite the same. It's cleaerer if I say it this way - a factory installed system may not directly plug into the harness of a car "equipped for installation" at the dealership.

 

Frankly it would be easiest to find a donor car that's trashed and pull the AC from it. From a junk yard expect to pay probably around $100 depending on the yard for all the parts, and expect to make a couple trips back for stuff you forgot to grab. Also expect a wireing nightmare and get some factory service manuals (ebay is a good shooting range for them), and get real familair with wireing diagrams.

 

I have no idea what that car would be worth where you are.... specs? Is it 4WD? Auto? Color? Condition? 2WD or 4WD makes a HUGE difference in value - sort of like a truck.

GD, I am thinking of doing the same thing with my '87 brat. I am planning on using it as a tow vehicle behind my motor home and this will at some time include trips into Mexico. This will put a high premium on cool air with my wife sitting a foot to my right.:grin: Uncomfortable wife in a small, enclosed area is not good! I have 41 years of proof!!:clap:

 

Also considering adding power steering, also due to wife's perceived needs for easier steering. How much is involved in the power steering upgrade?:eek:

Power steering is easy - you need the pump, bracket, lines, power steering rack, engine cross-member, and some parts of the u-joint assembly where it connects to the column. There's no electrical in the power steering at all, so it's a straight bolt in. The trick is finding an EA81 car with power steering - it was a rare option on only the top of the line GL's, never on Hatch's or Brat's, except the turbo Brat.

I guess it is time to start casing the yards as I have time and go by them to find the donor car. Here in Calif. it is not too unusual to find a unit with "all the options". At least I hope so!!:banana:

Last time i was at Pick-N-Pull in rancho cordova i saw a EA81 with AC and Power steering. I was thinking of grabbing everything to convert my hatch, but thats a big project for another day. Plus, now that i have my lift, i dont think i can use power steering without some minor modifications.

 

But yeah, parts should be easy to find.
