96 Legacy 2.2 LS

 

when i turn the car on the the Trans Temp light flashes for about 10 seconds indicating that the last time the car was running there was no power to the Duty C; and i can conferm this because the car drives like a truck with the 4wd locked (stops in slow turning/hard to shift to park after stopping).

 

i tried to put the FWD fuse in to disable the AWD but it didn't work!! it's a 20amp fuse.

 

why is my duty C not getting power, and why does the FWD fuse not work?

 

Disclaimer:

 

i did the Andyjo 4wd conversion a while ago, but the switch burned out so i reconnected the awd to it's normal setup.

 

all wires appear to be connected securely and tightly, the FWD fuse is NOT blown...

 

i dunno....i really need some help guys!!!

your duty c solenoid id fried. Your tearing up your transmission. The flashing light is telling you there is an electrical fault in the transmission ( a dead duty c solenoid). You either need to replace the tranny or repair the awd unit (dealer price NY 875.00). i had the same thing 2 weeks ago. With any luck yuour awd clutches are ok, but if youve driven the car any distance on old clutch plates like this i doubt it.

your duty c solenoid id fried. Your tearing up your transmission. The flashing light is telling you there is an electrical fault in the transmission ( a dead duty c solenoid). You either need to replace the tranny or repair the awd unit (dealer price NY 875.00). i had the same thing 2 weeks ago. With any luck yuour awd clutches are ok, but if youve driven the car any distance on old clutch plates like this i doubt it.

you gotta be kidding me. i used to think you were a cool guy...now you suck. ;) any idea why that would happen?

 

this is awful news...i think before i go that route i'm going to re-check all of the wires that got spliced with the Andyjo mod. but, being that the fwd fuse doesn't work...i'm guessing something's fused.

 

i'd LOVE to keep hearing other people's oppinions....

Maybe the switch u had was sending a continous 12v to the solenoid for fwd, and now the solenoid is fried. Or is that just the FWD fuse? Ur only solution is a used tranny or new solenoid c and make sure ur clutches aren't bad either if u do replace the solenoid.

i agree, i would check your resistance at the plug first, just to be sure. after that pull the rear section off and check the clutches. i dont know if i would go the route of a whole new trans, i have a extra rear section if you need one.

i say it was just age of the solenoid, added with the switch added to it ( you dont sena a 90yo man on a marathon).

i just suggested the tranny since the price of the repair is high, a used tranny can be cheaper.

at that low mileage its safe to just rebuild the AWD unit.

i just got the FWD to switch on. that should buy me some time, though it goes against the "fused together" theory (i think). i also tapped the wires together that were spliced for the Andyjo switch in my dash and they sparked, so i have power running.

Well the cost. Well i suggest u stop by subaru dealer except theree a little expensivve, however they do a good job. Try a local transmission shop that does import cars, i once tryed one that does just basic cars, and they had no clue what the heck they were looking. at.

ive posted my exact cost here on another thread. Mine was 875.00 plus 95 for a busted tranny mount. It took a week as they had to measure the plates then get the parts. 1997 obw.

i am very happy with the work.

slow down ... if the FWD light came on then it's not the duty c sol. (assuming the torque bind goes away.) you must have a wiring problem. didn't you report that your awd-all-the-time switch failed last week?? now you have removed it. recheck your wiring. unless you drove "locked" in 4wd for a while, you shouldn't have hurt your awd clutch pack.

( i do not mean this to sound hostile, i re read it and it did so i changed it a bit)

 

First off i suggested if hes been driving the car like this the damage has been done. The plates get chewed up very quickly when the duty c solenoid fails. Secondly he said that hes not very good with transmissions, and from the sounds of it hes not equiped to do it.

Not everyone has a garage or a driveway (i know i dont). When you have heavy torque bind, like i did, and like he does, it means the clutches are gone. If it was light TB then yes by all means just replace the solenoid and see what happens. He also said the fuse is NOT working. The light is on a seperate circuit from the duty c solenoid. If the light was on the same circuit the FWD light would be flashing with the duty cycle of the solenoid.

The temp light is blinking 16 times at startup indicating a electrical fault (in this case the duty c solenoid) has failed. He can pull the codes, but the dealership or shop wil do that for him as part of the diagnoses. Also a dealership wont replace the clutches if they arent needed (assuming you found a reliable one).

all of that is absolutely correct. but i thought he said he got the FWD to come on afterr messing with wiring under the dash. it just sounded like he did a poor job of installing some modifications and they failed. FWD didn't work, now it does.

 

i don't mean to be contradictory, i only know what i read here and what i have had to fixon my car. but it sounded like things changed from his original description of the problem.

1. 4x4 switch installed

2. 4x4 switch burns out

3. took wires off of the switch and connected them back together, finishing the circuit, putting the car back to normal.

4. worked fine for a few days

5. Trans Temp light flashed indicating the Duty C failing during the previous ride.

6. FWD fuse installed works for a day

7. fiddle with the spliced wires where the 4x4 switch used to be, sparks, there is power.

8. take out fuse, all works to spec.

9. trans temp light again

10. insert FWD fuse, nothing happens

11. fiddle with spliced wires where the 4x4 switch used to be, sparks, there is power, FWD light comes on after the next Startup.

 

 

that's the current state of events and where i am now.

 

i do know this, the FWD fuse takes precident over all other awd/4wd mods. ie, the FWD will turn off the AWD as well as the Andyjo 4x4 mod. the FWD is supposed to conquer all, i proved this the day i installed the 4x4 switch while the car was in the air. so, that's odd the it wouldn't work for some reason.

 

also, no, i don't have a garage, i live in an apartment and since i quit working at goodyear, it's been difficult to do much with my car aside from take it up to my boys for general maintenence which is when i can fiddle a bit while they're working on it.

one foot note. the duty c solenoid has to be able to be powered to turn off the AWD. Thats why you cant shut off the awd, the solenoid is burned out.

Keep asking questions! I am reading with great interest as I seem to have a similar situation. I didn't know I could just remove the rear of the transmission to get at the Duty C selenoid, this could save me some work. :D
