Peter Shaw
I have just installed a rebuilt ej22 into my vanagon and have some questions about the oil pressure: cold 65 psi 100F 25 psi 185F 12-15 psi I am using a vdo sender and vdo gauge. no increase with increasing rpms. seems really low to me, does anyone know the expected psi at operating conditions? cheers peter
Legacy777
Yeah that does seem rather low. Where do you have the sender installed?
86ruguy
i concure...where's the sender?
Peter Shaw
i concure...where's the sender? Its located on the top left side of the block, Not sure what they call the access hole, but as I recall it is where the original one was, between the alternator and the power steering pump. Seems low but any body know an expected minimum so that I can discuss this with the rebuilder and have some specs? cheers peter
Legacy777
If it's at the same location as the stock one, it should be reading the pressure at the correct spot. As for pressure. The factory manual lists the following info for the pump. @ 600 rpm 14 psig 4.4 qt./min @ 5000 rpm 43 psig 11.10 gal/min The relief valve set pressure is 71 psig. This information is for the ej22 normally aspirated motor. Something definitely doesn't sound right. Maybe a bad gauge, or something didn't get put together properly. I am going to buy one of the cheap mechanical gauges I saw on ebay and check it out. I want to rule out the sender, but since it starts cold at 60 psi I am thinking it works. thanks peter
Peter Shaw
my new best friend at the FLAPS loaned me his gauge and great news, tons of pressure, easily 65 at startup and 17 at idle when warm, up to 45 ish which some gas! so the sender is bad, wish it was not such a long way to the dash of a vanagon, i'd be tempted to run a mechanical. thanks peter
Legacy777
Glad to hear it was just the sender.
