'97 Outback with 120K - Keep or sell?

Recommended Posts

My 1997 Outback runs well with 120K. when it turned 100K I had all the usual maintenance done, plus a new oil pump seal, water pump, camshaft seals etc. Thanks to this board, btw.

I drive a lot - between 25-30,000 miles per year, and extra maintenance or breakdowns won't be convenient.

It seems cars with under 100K sell for over $6,000, but that price drops down to something like $3,000 as mileage gets to 150K.

For best value, should I:

- Sell it now.

- Drive it through the Winter, then sell.

- Run it into the ground.

And if I get a newer OB, should I go for the 6 cylinder, or stay with the 4? I've found it to have adequate performance for my purposes with the 2.5 l 4.

and drive it for another 200,000 miles.

We bought a 2000 Legacy with 100,000 miles on it, and the car was only 13 months old! We're at 145,000 with no problems at all. My '87 was bought with 130,000, it now has 205,000 and later this week I'll pile my stuff back in it and drive it from MD to MT, non-stop.

Take care of 'em and they'll treat YOU right for years.

AMEN. Take care of it and it will take care of you. I think it will be more worth your time and effort to run it until you find that new Subaru that you just can't be without! :) thats when you sell it. I've done this twice. I just plan on keeping it until about 300,000miles.. :)
