Tosh
There was a bit of an "incident" yesterday in which my turbo took a good hearty blow (now there is some decent shaft play) and my up pipe/crossover pipe was damaged also. So that means its time for an upgrade right ? I've been doing a tad bit of research trying to figure out which turbo would be best to upgrade with. I'm not looking for anything more then 10psi thats all I want any more then that is unwelcome. can anyone give me some ruff numbers on a VF11 and TD04 on a stock EA82 (IE no delta cams) from what I've read the TD04 isn't going to give me a hearty amount of boost until 3.5k and the VF11 is going to be at about 2.5-3k how bad is the lag all the way to 3.5k ? this is my daily driver so I try to stay out of boost to help out my wallet. Then again I'd like the power to be there when I need to pass or just am in a hurry. Another plus of the TD04 is that I can find em nice and cheap ($100) over on NASIOC I haven't been able to find any VF11's for sale. So give me your opinions on these turbos! calebz
I would say TD04 just because of availability of a low mileage unit. Even if you find a VF11, chances are it is from a 12+ year old car with a ton of miles. Not sure where you got the 3.5k numbers from, but my TD04 spools at about the same rate as the stocker. Very little noticeable difference. Maybe I got a special one
nkx
AND if you use a td04 it should be easier to plumb in a wrx ic should you decide to go intercooled!
Caboobaroo
Plus, you can find a low mileage TD04 for cheap, cheaper then a higher mileage VF11. I paid $120 shipped for my TD04 and it only has 18k miles on it, always had Mobil 1 run through it too. AND if you use a td04 it should be easier to plumb in a wrx ic should you decide to go intercooled! Yup, a lot easier for the plumbing so you can use aftermarket hoses for it from a WRX! Tosh
I'm already running a wrx intercooler so hopefully it will just be easier to reinstall my motor I found a guy who will give me one for $100 (I pick up) and hes gonna toss in a stock WRX up pipe and down pipe so I can cut the flanges off
Caboobaroo
I just took out the back mounting stud on the uppipe and welded it back about 1/2" from the original location. I used the bottom of the turbo as a jig so I could tack weld it in place, took off the turbo and gave it hell. Then went back over it and cleaned it up wih a grinder. If you need some pics on how some of us are running our plumbing, here's the main idea for the TD04, WRX TMIC and spyder intake. This is the most common... http://community.webshots.com/photo/302403464/2381973490067339125eJPOCR http://community.webshots.com/photo/302403464/2832625290067339125qbmuhz
Tosh
thats my current IC setup. I found some turbos for the "right" price but finding the up up pipe and down pipe TD04 flanges are giving me a bit of a problem does anyone have some or know where I can get some for cheap ? I'm also looking for the entire stock crossover and up pipe my had some issues with rust and holes.

Tosh
do wrx up pipes bolt up to the EA82 crossover pipe ?
calebz
Nope. EA82 - Uppipe and exhaust manifold = 1 piece WRX - Uppipe and exhaust manifold = 2 pieces. I just cut the flange off a wrx uppipe and welded it flush to the flange of the stocker.
Tosh
would anybody happen to have the WRX flange ? I can't find one at any of the junkyards around me. I know http://www.uniquemotorsports.com/products/IHI_flange.htm these guys sell em I might just go with that.
NorthWet
Local Craigslist listing had a WRX uppipe and downpipe for not too much. Not eBay's $10, but local so could save you on shipping if you were willing to drive a little.
carfreak85
I have a VF11 that I plan on throwing on my car in the coming months. Its going on an EA81T though, so the efficency might not be as high. Thats one reason to choose the VF 11 for me, a lower VE and thus less exhaust velocity and volume.
