When to shift out of 4x

Usually the reason for difficulty in shifting out is caused by slight amounts of binding from turning. If it won't shift out, then either break the wheels loose to relieve that tension or try backing up or turning one direction, then straightening out and trying again, then turn the other direction and straighten out and try again and so on.

 

As for the speed thing, yeah it doesn't matter how fast you are going. I have gone in and out of 4wd at 75 mph and it feels the same as doing it at 10. I usually stop going into low range just to make it easier on things, but it works fine to shift out of low range while moving.

Tires will also contribute to that problem. If you tires are not the same diameter on all four corners that too can cause binding. Best to keep the same brand on all four corners along with the same condition. Whch means using tires with less tread than the others.

You gotta be going straight. I usually wind out first then before hitting second I shift out of 4wd then shift to second. Works great cause I am going straight and the rpm's are up and I already have the clutch in. Never had a problem like this.

we take the RX up to 75 in lo-range. about 5000 rpm.

 

i like to shift between hi and lo in 3rd gear. 4th gear lo is about tha same as 3rd hi.

 

in a drag race type situation. start out in lo. shift 1,2,3 lo. when 3rd lo tops out, shif into hi and carry 3rd out, then 4,5 hi. it acts like a 6 speed, 3rd gear is the best for shifting up out of lo.

 

to shift down into lo, say for example in 3rd gear hi, push in the clutch and shift into 4th lo.

Also remember to check the air pressure in your tires. Low pressure in any one of the tires front or back will make that tire feel like its a smaller diameter and cause binding in the drivetrain.

every 4x anything will have this prob, tires always wear different and stuff wears out in the tranny. try goosing it and letting off the throttle, and when the drivetrain unloads pop it into 2wd. do this without the clutch, and it should work good. or if you are in 4x you should have some slick stuff under your tires, witch will make it easier too. why would you use 4x on dry pavement?

on or out of 4-Hi. It just slides noislessly, at ANY speed, well, at least up to 70, that's the fastest I've gone in 4WD.

 

Done that in a total of well over 100,000 miles counting both of our GL-10s, and never had a problem. Nothin' straightens out an inadvertant slide like snapping into 4-Hi!

why would you use 4x on dry pavement?

Wondering the same... wtf would you be driving around on dry pavement in 4X for?

 

Also.

What the Hell are you guys doing driving around at 75 in 4X for?

 

Save the 4X for when it's necessary.

This one I can vouch for .. Driven through wyoming in the winter.. snow and slush and sh!t all over the hiway.. people still doing 80mph.. definitely 4wd conditions.. but if you drive to slow, the local idiots will run you off the road

from my ole 86 D/R car... MAX speed in 4LO is 55 recommended.

 

I can't see using LOW at speeds higher then that anyways... but hey .. that's just me.

 

as for the binding... yeah from time to time i have to do the "reverse" thing to get it to pop out of 4WD into 2WD.

 

sometimes if reverse doesn't wanna cooperate then I just drive it straight for about a city block and then easily push down on the lever and it seems to want to pop outta 4WD into 2WD ...this usually is in 2nd gear too for my expereince -anyways.

 

of course I also agreewith the idea of replacing the gearlube from the tranny and diff. sub-box before it gets any closer to winter as in a different thread was suggested.

 

I use the Castrol GTX 80-95? weight lube.
