what are you going to put this in? i did a quick search and there isnt alot of praise for it. No source on who makes it, but walmart does sell re processed engine oil (not a bad thing).

Also remeber you still need to change the filter at regular intervals, and mosy synthetic manufatcures still say to change the oil at mfg suggested intervals.

Engine oil isnt something i would cheap out on, the cost to correct the mistake is too big.

The Rotella T Synth is good stuff. Read it on BITOG as mentioned above. It isn't THAT much cheaper than Mobil1, because the Rotella is sold in 4 qt jugs for (from memory) $16, while Mobil1 is in a 5 qt jug for $21. That is just a $0.20/qt difference.

I'm using it in my WRX, to get the 40w rating at the top (it's 5w-40 IIRC). No problems so far but I don't really have a good number of miles on. I change oil every 4-6K so , even if it were rated a little below M1 in quality, I feel I'd still be getting superior lubrication to non-synth with a little 'lee way' should I be late on a change.

I dunno (BTW - Rotella is a Shell Oil product)

from what I understand rotella is a heavy duty synthetic.. perfect for turbo cars.. I know many folks that praise the stuff and I plan on using it with my next oil change.

...and walmart has about the best price I've seen on it 15 and some change for the gallon.

I ran Shell Ultra 5W-40 as part of long serious of experiments. It's rather thin for a xW-40 oil. Both cold and warm.

I'm not running Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 which keeps my engine very happy - by the sounds of it. I haven't been really scientific with used oil analyses and such. I've gone by mileage and sound. Delvac 1 is the only oil I have found that really dampens piston slap.

My friend ran Rotella in his diesel tow trucks. It is really more for diesels. Gasoline engines don't need soot control. It is designed for turbo applications, so it probably can't hurt anything.

We did put it in a dodge horizon that we built for a radio station promotion. It helped quite the valve train considerable. Then the car got covered in bumper stickers.

I still say Mobil 1 synthetic over all is the best.

If you keep clean oil in your engine almost any modern oil will allow your engine to run well over 200K miles.

You may be spending extra money to make you feel good instead of to make your engine last longer or run better.

The noise issue may be the exception. Piston slap and lifter noises may respond differently to different oils.

Some people believe in changing the filter more often than the oil. Some people believe in using standard dino oil and adding a quart of synthetic for the additives. Be aware that additives are not always compatible.

Bobistheoilguy is the place to find what makes you happy in the way of oil for your vehicle. Read about shear strength and viscosity index if you don't read anything else.

I think Rotella synthetic is more than adequate for any engine and Delvac 1 is probably even better. I had an old Ford pickup that ran better pressure and sounded better on Mobil 1 15-50 than anything else.

Recycle your old oil. Any quick change place will take it, most are required to by law, I think. Many parts stores will also. Some garages burn it for heat.

Thanks for the link. I had my doubts when I read "spacebears". I agree that changing oil too often is a waste but most people will never have oil analysed and almost never look at it critically for hints that something may not be right. So for the general public who never pops the hood or checks the air in the tires, too often may be cheap insurance.

I think a 5000 mile interval is good. Easy to keep track of by the odometer. Change oil, "rotate" tires, look at everything. I don't drive like I used to. My tires no longer need service so often but it doesn't hurt anything.

so, let get this right, i take my car to the shop, geat an oilchange, rrotate the tires maybe an alignment. they total the bill and then addon a disposal fee.

i change my own oil and take it to the parts house and they have to take it for free. what's wrong with this picture?????

It does seem a little weird, likely Autozone/whoever has someone pickup the oil, maybe for a fee - but AZ gets you back to their store, maybe you'll come inside and buy something. Its a service probably covered by slightly higher prices across the board. I dunno

If 'disposal fees' get too high, folks'll just start pouring it over the fence or down the gutter. It's to everyone's advantage to make it easy to properly dispose of used oil, old batteries, mattresses, etc.

I've seen it listed on repair tickets - but maybe its a rip-off or was for some other fluid? Now I think of it, might've been for old coolant? I don't think it was specific - just a listed cost.

not sure
