tarabull
I have a '97 Legacy Outback Wagon. I want to put a Class I hitch so I can use a hitch-mounted bike rack for three bikes. I went to my local auto parts places and they only sell Class II hitches, which are more than I need. I did a quick google search and didn't find what I was looking for. Because I don't have a lot of confidence in my auto knowledge, I'm hesitant to buy something w/out a recommendation. Anyone install a Class I on their own Subaru? Where did you buy it? Any specific brands you recommend? BTW... The bike racks I'm looking at are compatible w/ a 2" receiver. Thanks, everyone.

You might look into Brandsport.Com I noticed they have a decent Subaru selection; I was very satisfied with my online purchase. Good luck Hunting. Manarius
I'm pretty sure I have a class I hitch on my car. It has a 200lb tongue max with a 2000lb tow max. It works great for me. I can tow my sail boat and a trailer full of tanbark with no problem.
johnceggleston
i'm not a hitch expert, but i thought a 2" receiver was more than a class 1 hitch. i thought class 1 was a 1+1/4" recevier. some one correct me ?? JPX
2006 WRX with Class 1 hitch - not a 2" receiver. But this works well for most bike racks. Just not the big swing out type. Install thread in this link.http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=870952 My 96 Legacy has a Class 2, but a weird flat-style receiver tube. Easily handled double jetski trailer and 4 bikes on a rack. Both hitches above are Drawtite.

Yup, you're correct. I did a little more www research and found that to be the case. Guess I need a class II for the couple of bike racks I'm looking at. Or I need to change the bike racks I'm considering. I did find out, tho, that I can install a Class I and buy an adaptor to make the receiver 2". But, that seems to be a more expensive option. Thanks, to everyone, for your comments and help!
Manarius
Dude. I have a class 2. How cool is that! (I have one like the 96 Leg's)
rfauber
I've installed hitches on a 97 and 2002 wagon. One was Drawtite and the other HiddenHitch. Installation was easy (even a caveman could do it). I never found anything other than a Class II, and mine worked just great. I have both for sale, actually. $75 plus shipping. Both have 1 1/4 receiver size (drawbar not included). idosubaru
I did find out, tho, that I can install a Class I and buy an adaptor to make the receiver 2". But, that seems to be a more expensive option.not only is it more expensive it's less desirable in my experience. get the class II hitch if you can. the "adapter" method works but the problem is that the adapter shortens the length you can slide the bike rack in - so you end up using the "longest" length hole, making it stick out as far as possible...not too mention the length of the adapter. it's annoying, i was about to cut my bike rack down to remedy that so it wasn't sticking out so far but we're selling the car and getting a new one - i'll get a class II hitch for the new soob!
