ejmartin
87 Loyal GL, 1.8 carburated 4x4.. This is what I got from the book and did, 4 times!! Alling 3 marks on flywheel, allign right (passinger)side cam sprocket with marks. Install right side belt.. Turn crankshaft clockwise one full rotation and re-alling three marks on flywheel again.. Allign leftside (driver) cam sprocket with marks and install belt.. Still doesn't start!! Am I missing something? I've got healthy spark to dist but won't fire and start!! Any ideas?? Anyone?? Do thes things bend valves when the belts break? Thanks!! Elliott in Boise..
kayakertom
Have both camshaft sprockets with aligning hole up, center mark of 3 lines aligned with pointer. Put on drivers side timing belt; rotate crankshaft 1 rotation, align center line with pointer, put on pasenger side belt. For timing, you may need to take out the distributer and align the dimple with the case mark so you know which way the rotor points for #1 firing. Take out #1 spark plug and rotate the engine cw (while facing it) and with a finger blocking the #1 spark plug hole determing the compression stroke and stop at TDC. Install distributer so that rotor is pointing at #1 plug wire contact.
NorthWet
If the engine was running prior to t-belt breaking/change, and you did not remove the distributor, then there should be no reason to muddy things up by pulling the distributor now. These are non-interference engines, no valves should be damaged. Did you recheck belt alignment after finishing driver's side and releasing tensioners? somick
After you rotated the crankshaft one full turn, did you check the marks on the cam sprokets? They suppose to point one up and one down. Sam
Loyale 2.7 Turbo
Back in 1996, we got the same dificults with the White EA82 Wagon... so, instead of usin´ the marks, we pulled the four sparkplugs and with a large screwdriver, by rotatin´ the Center Pulley, we stabilish where was exactly the "Top Dead Point" (As Said in Spanish) for the first Cylinder... We put the first T-Belt usin´ our own pattern, then the second by Rotatin´ one rotation crackshaft, and "Voilá" The car started and ran Good... I don´t know why, but it worked to my EA82... maybe marks wheren´t in the correct position, or maybe the Distributor had "Jumped" as said a friend mechanic that was helpin´ us -my dad & I- due to the fact that we was Running at High speed in 4th uphill when the T-Belt broked... I don´t know exactly, but maybe that can work to you... Good Luck!
ejmartin
I've checked and double checked the belts and the marks and it still won't fire!! It almost sounds like it wants to but doesn't.. It turns over and pops!! I wish I wouldn't have pulled the dist but thought I should check after getting advice to do so.. I've done the pull #1 plug, insert finger to achieve TDC test and have that correct.. So before re-installing the dist, I alligned the bottom dimple with the line on the dist case and when I slide it in and as the gears mesh, it makes a slight rotation.. Is this OK? And what direction should the rotor be pointing? Also, before my first two attempts to start it I re-installed everything, rad, pully belt and everything else.. Do I need to do this every time I think I have it or should it temporarly fire without all that? Any subaru guys in boise have a free hr. or two and like kind beers??? Thanks... hooziewhatsit
you say you installed the passenger side belt before the driver side belt? How'd you do this without having to take off the passenger side belt to get the driver side belt on? procedure I follow: both belts off Align crank to middle of three vertical marks Drivers side cam straight up put Drivers side belt on Crank engine 360*, direction doesn't matter Align flywheel to middle of three marks again Passenger side cam dot straight up Passenger side belt on. Crank engine a couple more times, verify that the cam dots are exactly 180* from each other. To install the distributor: Crank engine so the passenger cam dot is pointing North-West (10:30 o'clock). Rotor should now be pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. When you install the disty, you'll have to account for the 'spin' as you put it in, so when fully installed, it's pointing at #
[HTi]Johnson
....Crank engine so the passenger cam dot is pointing North-West (10:30 o'clock). Rotor should now be pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. When you install the disty, you'll have to account for the 'spin' as you put it in, so when fully installed, it's pointing at #1 I believe you want the driver's side to be at 2 o clock and the passengers at 8 o clock. Next turn the crank another full 360 deg rotation so that the passenger cam is pointing down, and the DRIVER side cam is pointing UP. With the driver side cam pointing up, the 3 timing belt marks will be in line. So with the 3 marks in line, turn the crank clockwise until the 0deg BTDC mark comes up. Use this mark to install the Distributor if it has been taken out. Straight outta Miles Fox's timing belt install manual.Find it here
