BlindSight
Carbed EA82 87 Subaru GL Wagon 4WD 5spd Manual. This is the front passangers side of the engine bay...there are small holes in the bottom of this that air was being sucked through causing a really rough idle...im assuming there was something else on the bottom that came off but for nw there is a piece of tape accross the bottom....any way to fix this or what part is it so I can get another one? Subaru_dude
that is an anti backfire valve. it's annoying, part of the egr setup i believe. I have a brand new one laying around. it was $150 dollars. It was only on my car a month until I just decided to de emission my wag. you want it? pm me if you do.
GeneralDisorder
Totally useless part - yank it and put an EGR on that doesn't have the pipe for it. GD

Loyale 2.7 Turbo
I´m not completely secure about that, but I preffer to Disconnect and close the EGR and it´s Linkage... Let me Explain: I have repaired too many Subies, from Friends, Friends of Friends, etc... and I saw two different ways where the EGR is working in EA82´s, one of those directly disturb one cylinder´s combustion; so if you just Close capping the Vacuum Hose that coming from the Carb, as long as any other involved in the EGR process, the EA82 first will become more Stable and will Idle and Accelerate more Powerfully and SOFT, and passing the time, the idle will become more quiet too... I Know that has somethin´ to do with carbon deposits, Cylinder Pressure... Etc... as long with correct timin´ but I don´t wanna explain all of this here, I just wanna Add that if you are sure you CAN dissable the EGR (Due to Emmissions Restrictions) DO IT! and Cap the Remainin´ Vacuum Hoses. You can find more info ´bout it, searchin´ on this Good Site. Good Luck!
moshem74
and what to do with the pipe that comming from the carb? it's not a vacume pipe..... it's more tick. thank you.
BlindSight
well after I fixed my idle problem the first time i noticed my car started backfiring when I would let off the gas to change gears...so you think maybe if I replaced it it would solve my backfire problem possibly? Loyale 2.7 Turbo
Well... Is not easy to Figure out without more images of the Hoses, etc... but the Pic Above helps... I Think that you should try this: (Well, it is my Suggestion) Close the vacuum Hoses comin´ from the Carb. to that piece and to the EGR, and close every remaining Vacuum Hose between those parts. Remove and Cap the EGR Vacuum Hose, (That comin´ from the Carb.) Try to re-set Idle (Mixture / Speed). I think that can make your Engine to Run Smoother and dissipate the Backfire Problem... but the Purpose of it is to see if there are any Vacuum Hose bad connected or wrong connected and to see if the EGR is damagin´ Engine´s Performace. If done that, Engine is Smoother and backfire is Gone (Or Almost) I Sugest to Check the Timin´ (Ussually works Better between 18º and 20º, instead of the 8º that says in Some -not all- EA82 Models´ Hood) If you need the EGR to Pass Emissions Test, maybe try to put New vacuum hose Lines between the Carb. and the EGR, but FIRST Check the Vacuum Lines´ Diagram. Good Luck!
BlindSight
yeah im in dallas tx.....so need the egr still...will try re-timing it next time I get a chance..has been about a year or so since the last time I did..and have done alot to it since then....so are you sure 18-20?..I remember looking up the specs in my manual and it did say 8. cd45
I pulled mine from the car. When it was given to me, the valve was broken and just sucking air. I removed it, put an aluminum plate under the EGR valve on the intake manifold, and plugged the other vaccuum line. It runs better than it did, with a better idle. I also had a bad backfire problem, and someone on this site told me that a quarter would fit the lines just above the exhaust outlet on the bottom of the engine. They fit perfectly, and now the car does not have a backfire problem. Good luck.
mikeshoup
so are you sure 18-20?..I remember looking up the specs in my manual and it did say 8. 8 degrees is for carb'd, and 20 degrees (or is it 25?) is for the SPFI I'm pretty sure. Stick with what the sticker on your hood says, unless you wanna play with timing advance.
GeneralDisorder
You said in post #1 you have a Carb - your timing is correct at 8 degrees. GD
