bratgrl
So, I read on Subaru3's webpage about getting the little plastic bushing to stop "shifter rattle". I called a dealership, they have the part he talked about. What I need to know how much trouble it will be to put it on. The shifter that is rattling is the 4WD selector. Can I fix it from the top side by pulling the boot up, or am I going to have to do something more drastic? I asked the guy at the dealership, but he had little or no knowledge about subies other than the pictures and numbers in his parts book. I'd appreciate any and all advice..... Thanks Bobby
subaruguru
if its what im thinking of than you should be able to get at it from the top real easy just remove knob then pull off the boot then fix the plastic peace:grin:
DerFahrer
If you can wait a few months , I'll let you know what's going on there when I drop the tranny out of my 79.
bratgrl
Subyluvr; I could probably wait, but in a few months I might be on this forum from the loony bin. But, if that's what it takes....... Guru; Maybe I'll lift that boot and give it a look see. That would be the least invasive way for right now. I just hope I can get it to stick back down. I just had to do that with the other one, and it was a pain in the backside. But I finally got it. Thanks guys.... Anyone else want to throw their 2 cents worth in???? Seahag1978
Bobby, For "annoying" noises, like shifter buzz, just turn up the tunes Now, on the other hand, if the noise is accompanied by a "shake, rattle, roll" or vibration... then turn down the tunes and listen... push the shifter forward toward the dash, so you can hear the "new" problem... always works for me! captainkettel
It should take two (2) bushings. They are easy to get at by lifting up the shifter boot. The bushings go in the shifter shaft itself. A bolt goes thru them and they fill up the movement in the shifter. There is like a little three sided flange the shifter shaft is bolted to which allows for back and forth movement. To engage and disengage the 4X4. Really easy to fix. Bushings do wear out, cuz the're plastic. They will only fit in one way. Round side in and lip side out. Good luck... Mary: Ummm, maybe it's just been a REALLY long day at work, but I don't get this. What do you mean by "new" problem?:-\ (I think I'm having a blonde moment) Or maybe I just need a beer or 3 . Captain, I feel a little better about tackling this by myself now. I was certainly not looking forward to anything major to fix my rattle. Thanks ever so much:) . DerFahrer
When you mean "rattle" do you mean that it makes a rattling noise? Or do you mean the shifter feels loose? If the shifter feels loose, I would suspect bushings, like kettel said. I guess it's just a big of a problem as the actual gear shifter bushings... Seahag1978
Mary:Ummm, maybe it's just been a REALLY long day at work, but I don't get this. What do you mean by "new" problem?Bobby It was meant jokingly. What I meant is, shifter buzz isn't serious, it's just annoying, like so many other noises in an old car, so turning up the radio cures them. When new problems come along, and they will with an old car, you will be hearing other noises that cause vibration or shake. This new problem will need your attention until the cause is found. bratgrl
It was meant jokingly. What I meant is, shifter buzz isn't serious, it's just annoying, like so many other noises in an old car, so turning up the radio cures them. It all makes sense to me now. Better day today. Kinda like "the brakes don't work real good, but the horn works fine".... When you mean "rattle" do you mean that it makes a rattling noise? Or do you mean the shifter feels loose? It's the 4wd shifter that's rattling. It doesn't really feel loose, just kinda rattles when I'm going down the highway (65ish). But if I put one finger on the top of it (where the 4WD sticker is), and push, the noise quits. Other than that, she's "cherry". I actually stopped and got the parts today, so I'll be putting them on as soon as the Brat gets back from the paint shop. I'm waiting very impatiently for them to finish painting it.... DerFahrer
Could just be a bushing, or a loose bracket, or something to that effect. I'm 99% sure it's nothing to lose sleep over. Like I said, I should have my 79's transmission out in the next few months, and my curious nature will no doubt be inspecting the shifter mechanisms to determine their condition. You'll have to let me know what you find in there when you drop the tranny.
