Fuel Help Needed

Recommended Posts

I have a 1984 Subaru Turbo 4 Wheel Drive ..2 door..Automatic..

Engine size 1.8

I have received much appreciated help here before when I needed a turbocharger and I got lucky finding and purchasing one from a member here and my Subaru has ran great since!! Unfortunately I find myself having to ask for help again as it seems to be having a fuel pump? or fuel related problem. The other day I ran to the store the car ran fine. I came out it started fine got about a block from the store and it starts acting as if it was running out of gas (like it was starving for gas). It stalled out and then would not start..I knew I had just put gas in the day before but thought possibly maybe it had been syphoned out because of reports its been happening in my neighborhood. So I call my daughter she comes.. but by the time she comes I try to start it again and it starts up kinda shaky at first..then increased to full power so I ran to the nearest gas station. Put in more gas just in case it was out or something. Started up just fine and I thought ok my gas must have been stolen...then I get about a block and it starts acting starved for gas again ..stalls out then would not start at all. Had to be towed home. My daughters boyfriend had checked filters and fuel pump and then put fuel directly into the car with nothing connected.. the filters etc.. it tried to start right up. After checking filters and fuel pump he believes it might be the fuel pump..but when he checked it again it acted like it was working and he could hear it and gas would pump out the line under the car by the fuel pump..but then try again and it wouldnt work. He said the fuel pump acts like it has a short or something. So my question is..is it the fuel pump and should I just go ahead and change the fuel pump or is there some other things I should be checking out as well?? I appreciate the input and all the help this site has given me in the past so here I am again!! :)

Thanks Again!!

Probably, but it could be a bad relay or poor ground.

Check for 12 volts at the pump when the key is first switched on.

Also, might want to check for poor grounding by putting a voltmeter between battery - and fuel pump -.Should not be more than .5V or so.

Good luck

Try changing the fuel filter. Did he just check the filter or changed it? aba4430

He just took off the fuel filter and blew threw it didnt seem to be clogged. When he first took it off it had a lot of pressure and gas flew out of it. He then took off the lines and we started the car to see if any gas came and nothing so he headed for the fuel pump.

if you have an air compressor, try disconnecting fuel line from pump outlet and then also under hood where it goes into the fuel intake.. and blow through the line in the car, make sure its not clogged too..

cant hurt, and it rules that possibility out

Thanks for the info.. will try that tomorrow and see how that goes. Checked with auto parts here and found the fuel pump to be around $130 - $160..sound right?? Found one for $64 but my subaru is fuel injected and it wasnt the right one unfortunately. Anyone out there have a good one for sale???
