fnlyfnd
Since my last attempt was foiled. I'll try again. Are you guys running aftermarket performance clutches. Or sticking with OE clutches. I dont want to know anything about swaping to an xtr clutch. I am talking, more grab from a performance clutch kit like clutchmaster, or are the OE's able to hold up when wheeling thru mud, snow, rocky climbs (not rock crawling - I do have a obw:rolleyes: ), etc... I am thinking of going with a clutchmaster stage 1 kit w alum. flywheel. But dont feel like being a $550 ginea pig, when a oe kit and flywheel would be $200+ cheaper
4x4_Welder
If this is still going to be a daily driver, I'd avoid using an aluminum flywheel. They have a thin steel insert that the friction material wears against, and it tends to warp pretty quick. Also, the lightweight flywheel help with street/strip, and sand running where you want to get the revs up quick, but when off road you need more torque. The mass of an iron flywheel helps keep the car moving when you are climbing over rough terrain, smooths out the power at low rpms, and creates a feel of more torque. I'd check out http://www.alleurasianautoparts.com/, I'm going to be using a clutch from them for my d/r5speed swap.
GeneralDisorder
Do not use a light flywheel - you will have no torque = bad for off-road low end response. Lighter means faster throttle response - but what use is that off the pavement? Quality OEM clutch works just fine. I can peel out with 28" MT's, and chirp them into second easily. Clutch slippage has never been a problem for my lifted wagon, and I would NOT go with anything that has more grab as it just makes it more difficult to slip the clutch for slow crawling. Most performance clutches are geared to a very fast lock up, and little to no buffering. That's not what you want off-road where speed of shifting, and acceleration are not the goal. Qman
As already stated the lightened flywheel will do nothing for you. The clutch is another story. Any stock replacement or heavy duty clutch will do just fine. What will wear your clutch offroad is the fact that you do not have a low-range(yet). If you continue to offraod you will find the neccessity for such a swap. Low RPM cruising is the norm for what you will be trying to do. But, you will also enjoy the smooth shifting of a HD or equivalent clutch assy. As you will find yourself out exploring and will want to use the forest service road with a little more speed that the 2.2 will afford you. I would order a Legacy 2.2 set because you'll need a cable style clutch kit. Good luck.
fnlyfnd
Thank you, thank you, thank you......This is exactly what i was looking for. Well, decision made. I am ordering a oem replacement. It is going to be mostly daily driven with the weekend offroad cruises. Gonna call Jamie in a week and order a 18wheeler worth of parts
