SuBrat84
They're OK, It just depends on WHO you talk to. Yeah.. I guess it depends who works on your car.. because they did okay putting my new short block in.. but two weeks later TOTALLY BOTCHED an oil change! jmickelct
Hi, Started getting a slight tick a week ago, not getting pretty loud. For a while it went away when warm, now is hanging in there. Long screwdriver has isolated down to the passenger (right?) front valve (area), if it was a rod knock, could it (appear to be) coming from this same area? Are there solutions to a knocking rod (short of a rebuild?).
nipper
Pull off the sparkplug wire and see if it changes. If it doesnt change its not a rod knock. If it is a rod knock, not much can be done besides a rebuild/replace. nipper
jmickelct
How would it change? Frequency, pitch, intensity? Tried it.... pulled all plugs, no change (just as loud, same rythm, etc..) Can valve knock be *really* loud?... warmed the volume clearly decreases, cold its *loud* Pull off the sparkplug wire and see if it changes. If it doesnt change its not a rod knock. If it is a rod knock, not much can be done besides a rebuild/replace. nipper
nipper
How would it change? Frequency, pitch, intensity? Pitch or volume. Frequency and pitch is related to engine RPM. nipper
jmickelct
Tried it again.... It does seem to change if I leave the wire off for a few minutes.... The knock is really a lot deeper (and louder) that what it would seem a valve assembly could produce... have a bad feeling... Rechecking the location with the bar, I guess it could be coming from deeper in the engine.. Can a single connecting rod be replaced? or is the the "while youre in there" routine... Bummer, how the heck could a tranny *and* the engine go all at once.. Bummer, seemed like a really clean car in good shape....
nipper
the case has to be split to get to the connecting rods, so no you cant replace just one. But yup you have a bad rod bearing, and they so LOVE gpoing through the side of the block at the most inoportune moment. nipper
jmickelct
Any idea if these tend to go relatively quickly? (unit was reasonably quiet a week ago). Noticed a slight tick (seems to "float" at different RPM, in and out...). Now is frighteningly loud.. This is how mine went: One morning on my x'rss country trip, in Iowa started the car one morning, heard the knock but it went away. Dorve the car to portland/seattle/San Fran (no noise i could hear). In fact i thought the car was running really well at the last fill up. Started climbing the pass out of sacramneto, got about 30 miles up, the car downshifted, at about 4800 rpm it was all over. One big bang, and lots of smoke. SInce you have noise, loud noise, you are pretty far along. Dont drive it hard, make sure AAA is paid up. nipper
jmickelct
Did your knock kind of "float" at different RPMS? guess I better get my old 93 Impreza back on the road... Thanks for your insights... -John This is how mine went: One morning on my x'rss country trip, in Iowa started the car one morning, heard the knock but it went away. I've seen pics of other subarus with this condition, and the all seem to go the same place., right at the temp sensor. nipper
jmickelct
So, assuming I'll need an engine (possibly a whole car, if the trannys shot too), do I have anything to gain from parking it (sounds like I'll need a whole rebuild anyway). Are the folks in Colorado (CCR) the cheapest way to go for a rebuilt engine (or can a used one be cheaper, as per the tranny.. (cant believe I'll have to start the whole frigging search all over again...)!!! Im going to assume it did, but in all honesty i never really heard it except that once. nipper
i did something i suggest to no one, i let the dealer rebuild mine, and had more parts replaced then i normally would as i dont want to open the hood for 105K except for fluid changes. nipper

jmickelct
Yeah, thats my thought... I hate to ask, but suggetions as to where to start looking? Took me ~2months to find a (cheap) used tranny...!! Your impressions of what they might run? (squint..) there are things i wont reapeat that is one of them. Why not go with a used engine? Steve455
it might be better to just rebuild motor youreself, thats what im gonna do when my 2.5 starts rodnocking.it looks like it can be done for $800.
jmickelct
Love the thought (and the price), but I have to admit to being pretty close to my pay scale just doing the timing belt... after 3 days and some wildly stupid mistakes, (am still head scratching wondering if I some how precipitated this units early demise with some unseen oil pump blunder).. and with Thanksgiving upon us, I'm guessing that willingly committing the next 3-4 weekends to a rebuild might not be the smartest move for me... Still like the thought of ending up with a 2.2 MT.... suggestions: look for a wrecked car with matching engine and tranny, you can find them for 300$ to 1000$. maybe even less if you live in subaru country. matching car could be sedan / wagon, GT / outback. tranny is optional. check ebay. also check out craigslist: http://www.crazedlist.org/ i needed a tranny, got the whole car for 415$ plus 65$ tow. 96 leg 2.2L wagon good luck. also read this : http://remanufactured-engines.com/page4.htm
jmickelct
Any reason why, if I found said models (1996) with a 2.2 and 4EAT they wouldnt go into mine? Any issues with my current computer governing DOHCs all of a sudden looking a SOHC? This also begs the question that I'd have to pull the units out which, again, if I had a friend with a barn (or even *heated* barn) and a couple of months, would actually love to jump into, but, (even though, short of the lift I have a pretty thorough tool inventory), would need to do some serious boning up on.. Should the unspeakable happen and I bail altogether (and end up with my frinds 93 Honda), how hard is it to part out the old girl (to be able to recover something for my Credit Union...). Or would some industrious sole be interested in doing the whole thing for the right price (still running, but will keeps the chickens awake...). -John suggestions: look for a wrecked car with matching engine and tranny, you can find them for 300$ to 1000$. maybe even less if you live in subaru country. matching car could be sedan / wagon, GT / outback. tranny is optional. check ebay. also check out craigslist: http://www.crazedlist.org/ i needed a tranny, got the whole car for 415$ plus 65$ tow. 96 leg 2.2L wagon good luck. also read this : http://remanufactured-engines.com/page4.htm
jmickelct
Yes, Was all over ebay, craigs and crazed list today (nada so far). The engine noise diagnostics site is *great*! Thanks!
