Performance suspension

Recommended Posts

What are you trying to do? Lower it? Raise it? Better handling?

Tighter as in what? Stiffer springs for handling? Lower to the ground?

There really isn't any web sites for this - you have to find something that fits your application and make it work. You may have to cut some springs down, or modify the spring perches on the strut tube, etc.

If you convert to 5 lug suspension using XT6 parts, you'll have a lot more options for front struts - the rear is just a coil-over and there are some accord springs that are similarly sized.

My wagen just feels sloppy. I would like it a little lower and tighter in handling.

It has adjustable struts so I may just lower them all the way to tighten up the springs. This fall I plan on getting new shocks and an alignment so figured I might as well deal with the springs at the same time.

might as well do a 5-lug swap since the market for suspension on the EA82s is none. Here's a link to the USRM about the conversion...

If you do a 5-lug conversion, it opens you to a lot of brake upgrades, suspension upgrades for the front, larger swaybars, rim selections, and tons more.

but that involves also buying all the 5 lug swap stuff and 5 lug wheels and tires.

for those who have not as much money but would still like something nice. ive heard miata shocks ive heart accord springs.

equal lowering on all 4 corners 1 inch up front 1 1/2 or so in rear.

ill buy new shocks i just dont know what springs to put on.

if u use miata struts can u use the springs.

For cheap upgrade, see if you can find an old RX at the bone yard and grab the front springs. They are stiffer than the regular GL's and improved the handling on my 87 GL-10 quite a bit. And yes, do get new struts.

I've not heard of using Miata springs. Is there a link to that mod?

Did they make the 4 speed A/T in 85? I thought those were added in 88? Mine had the crappy 3 speed, which I swapped out for a 5 speed FT4WD.

2 things...

1. this thread is more than a year old....

2. don't be spreading lies as fact. accord front springs in the rear of an EA82 subaru LIFT the car an inch or so. and Miata FRONT shocks are about 2" longer than stock, and rears at least as much shorter. in order to run Miata rears in an EA82, you need a much stiffer spring rate (I still bottom out mine on 400lb/in coilovers adjusted as tall as they get).

and the accord/miata stuff is only applicable in the rear.

for a decent setup for 4-lug, without spending too much money. KYB GR2s, and Ground Control (or similar) coilover springs for a '93-'01 impreza.

1. what does it matter that its old. i didnt ask old questions

2. how exactly did i spread lies and decption about the usmb you talk about useing miata stuff and i have seen people ask about the tempo springs.

coilover springs ok but how will that work with a longer shock. if you tighten it down to much your going to loose decent comfortable driveability.

Here's how to make the shocks stiffer:

1. Remove from car, take them out of the springs.

2. Drill hole in bottom of shock body.

3. Drain watery shock oil.

4. Tap threads into the drilled hold so you can seal it back up.

5. Fill the shock with proper amount of desired shock oil (could be engine oil or gear oil for all I care, i used 90W gear oil with my 600lb coilover springs).

6. Install plug.

7. Install back on car w/springs and junk.

8. Happy stiffness.

9. ????????????????

10. PROFIT!!!!!!!!

your driveability won't change until you bottom out the shocks.....and with stiffer springs you can easily run 2-3" lower than stock without risking that. in the back, you'll ride on the bump stops long before you actually bottom out the shocks.

if you're going for some extreme lowering, THEN you should switch to 2WD XT struts and miata rear shocks. but these (especially the miata stuff) will require at least 3" of drop

since I can't afford the AGX's this fall, I intend to try the WJM patented shock/strut fluid change. but I think it'll make quick work of the seals on my daily driven car
