sub97
Hi all, I want to get back into the Subaru family and have been considering a 1999-2002 Impreza wagon. I want to get the 2.2L engine for the gas mileage. I remember there being some concerns with the phase II 2.5L head gaskets with my old 97 Legacy Outback. Any problems with the Impreza I should be aware of? Would it be unreasonable to expect 30-35 mpg with the 5 spd manual? Thanks
Setright
No, that mileage should be attainable with an engine in proper tune and light right foot Impreza's of that age have very few faults. It started life in 1992 so any teething problems were ironed out earlier. Happy hunting
outback_97
FYI if you want the 2.2 you need to look at up to but not including 2002's, that's when the new design came out and all 2002 and newer have a 2.5 liter. Your 97 OB had a Phase I 2.5, the Phase II came out in '99 or '00 depending on model, and the HG problems associated with the different engines aren't the same, more on that here if you're interested: http://users.sisna.com/ignatius/subaru/hg.html And FWIW we regularly get 30 mpg on highway trips in our '03 TS wagon with the 2.5, and have gotten up to mid 30's... It's an automatic though. Steve
