Apparently 6-ply offroad tires don't always have 6-ply sidewalls

Cliff Notes: When beating on the car in a field make sure you don't slide it around too much when there are sticks around. Your sidewalls might not have the strength it has on the treads.

 

The car: '88 GL Wagon 5 speed D/R with 14" Peugeot wheel sporting 195/75-14 Wildcat LT A/S 6-ply tires.

The situation: Rallying it in a field and on gravel roads.:banana::burnout:

 

I found out the hardway that the Les Schwab Wildcat LT A/S 6 ply tires don't have 6 ply on the sidewalls. A stick punctured a hole in the sidewall while goofing off in a field. Apparently the sidewalls on these tires don't have the 6-ply continue around from the tread. Another thing I learned was that Road Hazard warranty means exactly that....No offroad warranty. DOH! At least Les Schwab guys met me halfway.:headbang:

Those are the All-Terrains correct?

 

When I was checking into tires, I almost went with the Wildcat EXT (the Mud-Terrian) till I found out it was only a 4 ply sidewall. I've been told by my local shwab that they are made by cooper, so very similar to the cooper Discoverer...

 

The only 6 ply's I could find in the smaller sizes are the Interco Swampers, and the Hankook RT01's (what I have). Have to admit I've never had a puncture yet. I've seen three or four of the wildcat's with sidewall punctures - seems like a weak point on them.

Yep - I've got a set in 205/75R14 with one flat tire, and another that has like 3 jerky sticks in it. I don't know what the deal is with them, but the sidewalls are definately weak in my experience - at least on the AT's.

 

Oh - when I said the only "6 ply's" I could find I meant sidewall....

 

Don't like AT's myself - the tread pattern might as well be a street pattern for all the good it does around these parts. Good for desert racing from what I understand, but not much else it seems.

Oh, great. Lovely tires. So much for not worrying about the tires since they are 6 ply. :banghead:

 

I am going camping this weekend @ ~5,000ft up. I guess I can't play as much out there and I need to pick my way up and be safe. Les Schwab will get the new tire on the wheel by Thurs.

It is hard to justify getting rid of these tires I have now with the amount of tread that are on it. I will just tiptoe through the tulips and make sure to be careful of the sidewalls.

 

Of course I find the Tire FAQ after I already went through this episode!

Good thing you got them from Schwabs and they honored half of it.

I think it wouldnt matter what tire you had on, doing what you were doing intails certain risks. Live and learn, eh? I wouldnt worry to much about offroading, just watch out for the sharp rocks.

BFGOODRICH,THEY ARE SPENDY $$$.THEY HAVE PANTENTED TRI GUARD (3 LAYERS OF STEEL MESH)IN THE SIDE WALLS ALONE.IN ALL THE BAJA MEXICO RACES,THEY ARE THE BEST.AND HAVE BEEN FOR YEARS.IM SHORT ON TIME TO GIVE MORE INFO,SO YOULL HAVE TO SEARCH.:cool: THEY ARE WORTH EVERY PENNY.

SJR...My buddy's brother has them on his cherokee. and they're awesome. clear out very well in the slick stuff, and are very smooth on the road. if I can afford them, I'll be getting a set for the 4runner in the spring.
