another is it worth it question (86 Brat)

Recommended Posts

well, i found this brat for $450. it comes with a load of extra parts, including all parts to fix it, and a spare engine tranny. the only thing with it is that is was wrecked, and supposedly totaled, but the hit doesn`t look too bad. the thing that makes me scared to buy it is the salvage title. i`d like to buy it and restore it, but is it worthless with that? it has absolutly no rust. heres pics:

Front end looks pretty whacked - you are going to need a front clip from a wagon or something to make it decent again. No way all that structural will come back out straight. Too many crumple zones, and sheet metal with factory bends.

As for the title, it won't make it worthless, but it will certainly hurt the value some - especially to those ebay types.

You could find another Brat that's got a clean title but is wasted with rust and "transfer" the vin over (move the plate or change the dash, and cut out the section of the firewall and weld it in). Illegal of course, but it's not as if people don't do it. I guess there are also some states still where you can "wash" a title of it's brands. I hear Kentucky used to be that way - not sure if it is anymore.

Sadly being an 86, it doesn't have the seats or the side-steps so may be worth a bit less due to that. It is the Marina Blue color which is nice (same as mine - I quite like it)

Salvage titles only hurt you if you want to re-sell and make a profit. But if you want to keep it for yourself, this is a pretty good deal. A front clip from a wagon would replace what you have there if you're very handy and want to have a real project. If it becomes more than you want to deal with, you're only out your time and the $450 which is nothing compared to buying a non-salvage titled Brat with some rust issues for $1000 or more. No rust in your neck of the woods is worth a lot. If you buy it, document everything in terms of what was wrong and what was done to repair it. Salvage titles are only an excuse for insurance companies to total out a car so they don't have to deal with the actual repair costs. If you document everything and repair it properly, you might even recover the actual value of the car before the salvage title was issued.

If you look the crumple zone, is not crumpled. It just needs a front core support and you should be on your way. If it is rust free and in NY, you would be a fool not to buy it.

Jerrys salvage title BRAT sold on ebay for over 2500, with still some dents in the quarter panel. No it will never be a 5000 dollar Brat, but show pictures of the damage, and the repair and get it painted it should be a solid 2000-2500 BRAT.

Right - the crumple zones look ok. It's just that if you attempt to yard on the front end with a rack you'll pull the crumple zones out too. That was what I was refering to - not that they are damaged, but that they make it more difficult to repair the damage it's got. A front clip is definately in order for that one - you may only need the radiator core support, but the final say will come down to the frame rails, and how tweaked they are. It may not be much, but even 1/2" will make it really messy, and could damage the alignment and driveability.

I still say get it - that's a good price. But beware - the current owner looks to have inspected the damage, and if it really were a slam dunk easy repair you would think they would do it, put the panels back on, and get 2000 for it....

Wow..... looks in good shape except for the hit! Price is right for an offroader.....but the metal is too sweet to do that with it. Wow. I like the topper too. They woulda sold it to me (but I have a thing for '86 brats) I'll sell you a pass fender real cheap! -Oh, btw pm me with where that 360 van was parked - I wanna check it out.

i`ll try to go ahead and get it, but i know of a completly rusted out brat a guy was giving away about a year ago, but with a clear title. want to see if i can contact him first.

one good part is that it does indeed come with the front clip, its in the back! he also has the grill, bezels, fender, bumper, ect. it comes with a bunch of spares. worse comes to worse, i out to be able to get my money back out of it, right?
