Andyjo Posted August 24, 2006 Share Posted August 24, 2006 So, this story begins on Sunday the 20th of August, starting in Bradford, NH. So i load up the trailer & roo' with junk for school, and head out at about.. say 8amish, it's raining pretty good... no big deal, i roll up through VT, more rain, keep going... stop at the girl's house... get more junk in the roo' keep going... cruise on over to Potsdam, NY. After unhitching the trailer, emptying the roo', dropping the box & bike from the roo' it obtained 3 canoes stacked on the 78" load bars (i suppose it could have taken 4...), but anyhow, it's still misting/raining. at about 8pm Sunday the 20th of August, we head out, 13 canoes, on 2 vehicles (i'll have to get some pics...) still, some rain & mist.. no biggie... roll down 56, head over to the first drop off... the Oswegatchie River, drop 4 boats, head over to Tupper lake (refuel & coffee time! ~10pm) cruise over to the mighty bog river, drop 4 more boats, at this time my buddy w/ his truck (pulling the canoe trailer) starts to have some lack of voltage problems... eh.. no big deal, we keep on rollin' on to Long Lake... Coming down the Hill into Long Lake (it's a big hillish, with a bridge at the bottom, then leads into 'down town') i notice tom tailgating me.. no biggie... then he's in the other lane passing me.. no passing zone.. over a bridge... but.. eh.. my friends are wierd, whatever, we finnally get to the dropoff point (right over the bridge at the beach), and i get out... and am like 'hey guys.. .uh... what's up?' So they proceed to tell me all about how the truck died the second they stopped... infact every time the windshield wipers would go, ALL the lights in the truck would dim... So... we unload the last 5 boats, and proceed to rig up this beast of a truck (chevy silverado shortbed thing) with a canoe trailer to the roo', and we tow it a good 1.5 miles to the public boat launch, up some hills, down some hills... you know, no big deal for the mighty roo..... but keep in mind its still been misting & raining the whole time. So, parked the truck, yanked the battery, all of us are piled into the roo with a bunch of gear, and away we go! back to po-dam (~1am). So... rollin' along at a good clip, sporting the lightforces for a good portion of the time, we get a good ways on the road, pretty much in the middle of nowhere, and the roo starts bucking... making some bad noises, the rpms just started jumping & falling... not a good situation... especially in the middle of nowhere.... SO no big deal, right? we pulled over... turned it off, let it sit for a while, started up again... drove about a mile.. it did it again... so i started thinking... i've had problems with my fuel pump before... so we poped the cover on that, and wiggled a bunch of wires, and fired up the imp again... it went pretty well for a good 10 miles this time (all the way through Tupper lake)... just out of the town... starts acting up again... alot... we try playing with the fuel pump.. nothing... the thing that actually seemed to help the most was opening & slamming the rear passenger door... but whatever, so we limped back to Potsdam, did about 40mph the whole way.... with a very angry roo' Oh yeah.. and we got a CEL to pop up after dropping the battery repetivly on the fuel pump hatch.... it helped a bit... but got a cell.... So long story a little shorter, we finally got back to po-dam at about 4am, Monday the 21st. Quite a bit of an adventure... so the next day i rolled over to the auto place and checked out my CEL, and i got MAF low circuit input... hmm... doesnt' sound good.... so i ordered a new MAF ($207 ) And it's now sitting on our bar... waiting to be installed. SO, the moral of this story? If you have a PVC snorkle, and you drive ALOT in the mist/rain junk.. you could possibly get some moisture on you MAF.. .and make it not happy.. and get you stranded in the middle of nowhere... On a side note... went to the roo' dealer today and started looking at other roos mm... the outback xt there look so sexy But yeah.. that snorkle is going to come off... and i may end up bringing the imp back to stock, to get something... a little more reliable :-\ Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Never done it in my Subaru, but I've had several domestic clunkers leave me up the creek without a paddle. I can see where water and the MAF might not mix. You'd think the darn thing's made of gold by the price, though. I'm really hoping mine doesn't decide to give up the ghost anytime soon. Don't much feel like scrapin' out the ol' bank account. the_bard Posted August 24, 2006 Share Posted August 24, 2006 I can't see some sort of water trap doing much for mist, right? Makes me wonder if the stock air intake has got something to constrict the airflow, then opening up afterwards, in attempt to dry the air a little bit. Or if something like that would even work. I just got to thinking about the carb icing in an old Cessna that I used to fly in. As a side note, I'd never have thought that I'd actually run across the words "Oswegatchie River" on the USMB ;o)... I grew up (1st through 8th grades) in Oswegatchie proper. Manarius Posted August 24, 2006 Share Posted August 24, 2006 Well, my MAF went just like yours did - only without the rain part. I'm convinced that eventually they just go bad. Man, you should have talked to Frank (Blackbart) over on bbs.legacycentral.org, he could have hooked you up with a used MAF for $25 + shipping.
