betzilla
I'm down to the end of my Potenza's.... 35K. In San Diego, no snow, little rain. When I was shopping before, I was advised by tire retailers to get less of a tire for my driving style and weather conditions, but wanted to go for the possibilities of going in snow. Well, little time in rain and snow, looking for a longer lasting tire with comfort, decent behavior in rain, perhaps snow. Costco has Michelin Pilots for $126.99 with $60 rebate for 4. Other retailer offers BFG Assurance TripleTrek with buy 3 get one free.. $420 for 4. Which way to go? Open to other ideas. Subie Outback Wagon Ltd 2001 has 80K on it, doing fine. Should I buy for another 4 years or think about getting a newer version Subie?
subiefan
I'm not much of a tire person, and tend to get what's good but still cheap. I'd go for the Michelins. Don't know much about the Pilots...there all-seasons, right? If so, I wouldn't. I face snow every winter, so I run cheapies in the summer and dedicated snows in the winter. I guess it really depends on how much money you have to throw around. With 80k, your Outback isn't even broken in yet! These cars can go over 200k easily. My '93 Impreza is sitting at 193k...I'm almost there. I'd still trust it more than a brand new piece of GM garbage. Plus it's a lot easier to work on. Those transverse V6's are a joke to work on. otis
I'm also not a tire expert, but it seems you have 2 sets of tires that are night and day. I don't know which pilot's you're looking at, but I always thought pilots were high performance tires with so-so wet/snow traction while the TT are strictly all-season tires, with no-performance (z rated vs t rated). I guess it kinda depends on what your "driving style" is.
Ranger83
Costco has Michelin HydroEdge. They've lasted over 66,000 miles on our 97 OB.
Wayne Boncyk
I've had extremely good luck with Big O store brand tires, the Legacy Tour series. I've now had 2 sets on my '96 OBW, each set providing over 80K miles of wear. That's not bad considering my aggressive approach to driving, and the fact that my Outback spends a significant portion of its driving time evenly split between back-country dirt/gravel roads and interstate highway cruising. My only concern in suggesting the Legacies is that Big O now gets them from Goodyear and I think they used to have them sourced by someone else, so the old name is on what amounts to a new tire. Also, the treadwear rating used to be 640, and now I see that it is 620. BTW - it is kinda cool to have a set of "Legacy" tires on a Legacy Outback Wagon!
