Is it just me...

Recommended Posts

i don`t know about "massive amounts" but my old brat could roast the tires also in 1st, but i could never get it to churp 2nd. by the time you get to 4th gear, the torquey feeling is about gone:-p

Mine will chirp second most of the time, don't get me wrong, it's still slower than mud, but it's got way more torque than I expected out of a 1.6, usually torque comes with increased displacement. I'm very pleased with my first EA71

i have this FE motor sitting here with even higher compression and a better cam grind than a standard ea71. i was gonna drop it into my last brat, but i sold it to Paul when i sold my brat. its just awaiting him to pick it up. one of those along with a weber would make a brat into a rocket.

Yeah, I'm torn on the Brat... I have little to no desire to offroad it like my wagon, I actually would love to do an EJ swap.... it would make one mean sleeper :D

Two things I'd like Subaru and Subaru of America to have the balls to do is to bring back a 1600 for the American/westernworld market, and bring back an on demand mechanically engaged dual range 4WD tranny.

The 1600 we've always considerd the real work pony of the herd.1100's good,1300's excellent but about to lose ground,1400's problematic,1600's the ANSWER.For me,life pauses there.I've come to use and abuse the 1800's but never warmed up to them like I have to the 1600.There's a certain old world tech, antiquity about them but they were leaps ahead of the 1400's and those previous.Any 1600 is a great engine in my opinion. The FE with the higher compression, etc.,and special gearing made even more sense of it all.A dual carb set-up 1600,yummy.

1600, :headbang: the end.

I'll end this with that famous quote from my wife,on the cell phone, calling me from her '96 Legacy coming back from the Carlisle Import/Kit Show with me running up front in my 1600 1978 4WD wagon with a buggered speedometer...."I'm doing 90 and I'm losing you...can you please slow down?"

Having not even driven my 79 yet, I can't attest to its power :(

But... the FSM says the torque is only like 80 ft-lbs or something, BUT it peaks at 2500rpm!! That is a thing of beauty, and that can only come from a 2-valve, single-cam, pushrod design. Doesn't do jack for power, but it allows for a lot of torque.

My XT, as well as most all EA engines, are the same way.

I can't attest to the 70's ea71. But my sisters 1600 (which I'm pretty sure is the high compression one) hauls more rump roast than my ea81 at top end. Its a damn fine little runner. some nicer carbs and it sure would be a fun one.

...or does the 1.6 have a massive amount of torque. I swear from a roll in first I can mash the gas and just boil the front tires and forget about getting on it in a low speed turn. It's got way more torque than any other sube I've had.

LOL!

I used to be able to squeel one of the front tires on a turn from a stop with my '78... But that was with ************ty 165 series tires that werent in that great of shape... With my new 205 series tires, it NEVER squeels anymore and it can actually make hard turns without loosing traction much like my Impreza ;)
