ericem
Well i was thinking if that would reduce engine noise a bit, because i see so many other subaru's with that insulation ,think it would make it quiter?
Megell
Well i was thinking if that would reduce engine noise a bit, because i see so many other subaru's with that insulation ,think it would make it quiter?[/quote It might make it quieter if you are standing outside of the car and leaning against the parking meter while the engine is idling, but I don't know if it makes that much interior noise difference or not. I tend to think that the under hood insulation is more to protect the exterior hood paint from engine heat deterioration than anything else, but I could be wrong about that. I would either pay more attention to the inside firewall areas to insulate or check to see why your engine is so noisey in the first place. Heatshields are a common noise issue with Subarus is some cases and can be mistaken for engine/drivetrain noises. My 91 Legacy sedan 2.2 engine is very quiet while idling, but there are certain RPM ranges while driving that the heat shield noise makes you think the drive train is coming apart. Just my thoughts, I hope it helps Mike
nipper
your forgetting one other thing...... heat. Hood insulation may hold the heat in, and thats not a good thing. Look for the sources of your noise, like valves that need adjustment, worn belt tensioner etc etc first nipper
ericem
Im not saying my car is loud, it super super quiet but the engine well,it would be nice to be a little smoother sounding.
nipper
Well its got lots of motvng parts, and is not a 60,000 $ car. Noise vibration and harshness is so much more then insulation under the hood. Its a matter of motor mounts negineering and alot of testing. Just turn the stero up or get used to it nipper
Manarius
I have hood insulation on my car - it's just as noisy as any other car. If it wasn't on there, I'd probably never care that it wasn't. It's not a noise barrier - it's something to make the hood not get so damn hot.

Just thought it would be nice to make it more modern, and vibration, well there is no vibration lol. I cant even tell if the engine is on or not, quite offten i start it while its on, lol. The only time i feel a little vibration is when ac kicks on, but it still isnt bad. And for a 13year old car with high millage, it still flies, and i have never touched anything on that engine except the timing belt and water pump, and thats all. But i was just wondering, for some reason after i changed my gas cap the check engine light stop turning on every so often on the highway, and it now sounds alot quiter and idles WAY better, why? Does a airleak cause a problem where it is hard to grab fuel? ANd the engine struggles?
nipper
a 1993 doesnt have a pressure sensor for the gas tank, that came much later. Could have been affecting the EVAP system and that could do it. nipper
