joostvdw
right, so I have a choice now, my old VF7 is taking a crap and I have to replace it, I can have it rebuilt for 500 euro and go one just the way it is, or, I can get a TD04, have it mounted and a IC for like, 600 euro's.... So this is a forced decision, I have to pick either one and stick with that choice, I don't have the money to switch around. Of course the TD04 will gross me more power but what about reliabilty? Is the stock engine/fuel managent up to it, at stock boost (I believe that is 10psi right?)? It is my daily driver and if it blows up it's "bye bye XT" because this is one of the very last XT's in my country.... one final question, does a impreza IC bolt onto the XT? Or do I have to fab something for it to work? thanks in advance, Joost
Caboobaroo
The stock boost on my TD04 is 7 psi BUT you have to remember, the TD04 flows more air then a VF7. So the boost will be the same, but more air will be forced into the engine with the TD04. The stock fuel system can handle it but at higher RPMs, it'll start to run a bit lean. Next thing you have to think about. The VF7 is a direct bolt on since its the stock turbo for that car. TD04 requires a lot of time to get it to bolt onto the car, then plumbing, intercooler, etc. I have pics of a TD04 and intercooler install on my '89 RX, which will have the same engine as yours. http://rides.webshots.com/album/302403464nPmSgF Just scroll through the pics and you'll come across them. I have pics of the stoc, nonspider intake with a mockup plumbing, then the actual plumbing I have, with has a spider intake on it now.
NorthWet
2 things, one somewhat on topic, the other one rather off topic. First, for much less than 500Euro you could get a good used VF7. They are pretty common and inexpensive in the USA, and even with shipping should be economically feasable. Second, what makes you believe that your turbo is dying? Have you checked the shaft for excessive axial and/or radial movement? Is there oil in your intake tract (could be other things), or is it just not building boost (again, could be other things)? joostvdw
caboobaroo: what kind of plumbing are you talking about? the flanges will be made and welded for me, I'm adding a impreza IC so plumbing to my spider intake shouldn't be that hard? north wet: I believe my turbo is broken because it burns a lot of oil, it uses a litre of oil in about 800km's (don't know what that is in non-metric sizes, sorry), it still boosts good, I haven't check axial/radial movement, I'll try this weekend. there is no oil in the intake and I do not believe the rings are gone (had the heads off 6000km's ago and I could the original cross markings in the wall) do you have any idea what a VF7 + shipping would cost me? You have to remember, the plumbing to put the intercooler in there is going to be different. Its not going to be a bolt in deal. You'll need to figure out the piping you'll need to get it to work. Also, plumbing to go from the airbox to the turbo, another deal that has to be worked out. Then plumbing to go from the intercooler to the throttle body. Its not exactly the same on the Imprezas. You'll need a reducer the right size, to go from the intercooler to the throttle body since they are not the same size.
