Found some Axles on Ebay ...

Recommended Posts

Good report on that guy and the axles!!

Just got one not too long ago, just installed it days ago.

My buddy Charlie was drooling over it. "Wow,that's a freakin' Subaru axle, not some rebuild."

Be aware that the diameter of the shaft where it passes through the bearings is NEW,not worn like a rebuild so it's TIGHT,real tight.

Is that Skip's alter ego/backup eBay name I see bidding on BOTH of them? Skip???

I might be mis-remembering and I can't check this since I sold the shop manuals for my '86 wagon a while ago, but I believe the shaft diameter is heavier for the 2WD; don't ask me why. Spline count is only different for the turbo axles (25 as opposed to 23 on the DOJ end). Something funky about the axles for an automatic also, but I can't remember what that was. If someone has a OEM shop manual for an EA82 car, it's pretty well spelled out there.

Somehow I remember that ALL turbos had the 25 spline DOJ, automatics too. I don't recall that the CVJ was different. The different axles can be identified by one, two, or three raised rings on the shaft nearer the CVJ; unfortunately I can't tell from the pic in the ebay listing since it's too small. Anyone with an '85 or later FSM that can look this up for us? I know I've interchanged 2WD and 4WD axles on my Brat without problems and I suspect the same would hold for the EA82 cars.

I have a mixture of turbo & non turbo axles on my 3AT 4WD wagons.

My 86 FSM shows 25 spline only on MT turbo. 2WD / 4WD no difference.

The MT turbo 25 spline is the only kind I have not used on my 3AT 4WD wagons.

In my 90 FSM, they seem to have changed things a bit. The 25 splines are used on Turbo MT 2&4WD and turbo AT 4WD.

Okay, I'm about to crack open this axle ... and I think I may have goofed.

I have a '90 Loyale MT2WD non-turbo. And this is the Axle I scored off of Ebay. Definitely 3 paddings on the shaft, and definitely 25 Splines inside there, according to the page Turbone gave. Here's the label off the box:

The Manual and some peeps tell me it's for a Turbo only? But others tell me it's fine. If what I'm reading in the maual is correct, there is no such thing as a non-turbo with 25 splines on the inner sleeve, correct? My parts guy comes up with the exact same part number for both the 2wd and 4wd .. ugh!

It's gonna really suck to have this thing pulled apart & dropped & not have the right part for 2 more days ...

25 splines is definitely for the turbo. It'll fit without any trouble until you drive off when it will shear off the roll pin and spin on the stub axle (been there, done that). All is not lost however, since I'm sure some turbo owner will buy it from you.

Ok ... fair enough. Sucks, but it happens ... so I guess I have an OEM Axle for sale, lol.

Now - looks like I'm shoppin' for some rebuilts ... Cardone and USA Industries both make rebuilts ... $65 bones a side. Any reason to (or NOT to) do both of them at the same time while I'm droppin' stuff?

I have had good luck buying used ones from a local Subaru specialist repair / used car shop. Buy boot kits, clean & regrease, etc..

My other source has been parts cars.

As far as replacing the other one, only of the boots look like they are as bad as the one that failed. You don't get to save much work doing both together.
