GoldDiggerRoo
I know all mazdas including mine have some thing where you have to hold up the handle to lock the door when you shut it, except for the back doors Yeah, so do subarus...... daeron
Yeah....I have to say, of all the cars I've ever had to break into...... the Subaru is by far the hardest to do with a slim jim, the rubber seal at the bottom of the door windows can be a b!*ch. The easiest ever was my Z, it took like 3 seconds to get into. BTW, I'm not a professional theif or anything but I am blonde and locking my keys into my car is something I've done many, many, many, many times.... how did you lock your keys in a Z?????!!!!! it must have been a ZX (sorry to be anal) because all the 70s Zs (maybe not 77-78 280s, they changed the doors a little bit but i thought id checked that..) from 240 to 280 were almost impossible to lock the keys in the car!! the dorrs simply will not lock unless they are shut.. so you either have to be inside the car, with the door shuit, locking it from the inside.. or outside, with the door shut, locking it with the key. the only way to lock them in is to lock both doors with the hatch open, AND THE HATCH BUTTON LOCKED already, and toss the keys in the hatch. the 280ZX i believe removed this unique feature of the 70s datsuns... IMPOSSIBLE to lock your keys in. simply by making it impossible to lock the door when it was open.
ezapar
But back to the topic of getting into an ea81 hatchback. . . I locked my keys in my first one a couple of times. The rear window was my way in. (It as a DL, no hatch release.) A little wiggle and yank, and the rear window can be made to open. Then with some dexterity, a screwdriver can be used to take off the screws holding it to the car. No damage, no scratches.
Hodaka Rider
Glad you got into it! I had this happen in my '83 Wagon (yes, I know, Zap). We tried about 20 different Soob keys that RGuyver had at home - and none of them worked! Strangely enough, the key that was locked inside worked with all 3 of the wagons I had (2 parts cars). AAA guy took 3 seconds with the slimjim.

daeron
Yeah, '79 280ZX, still have one of those bugger lying around, think I'm gonna cut it up to make a trailer to tow behind my sube, that or a drift car.... either way. yah i didnt mean to mock you or anything, apologies if my "tone" wasnt humorous enough.. I had honestly assumed it was a ZX, as i described its virtually impossible in a first gen Z. My main purpose was to laud the wonderful engineering that can prevent it.. but in 79 they had locks just like on the soob.. if you lock it and shut it, it unlocked.. you had to lift the handle while closing door to lock it.. but i dont understand why not have the doors totally unable to lock unless fully shut, like the old Zcars. It makes sense on any vehicle, and it is NOT an inconvenience in the slightest, especially with a modern remote lock/unlock on the key fob.... Yeah, old mopars were good for stuff like that, you actually had to use the key to lock the dor after it was shut, I managed to lock the keys into the trunck once, but it was a rarity to do so. daeron
somehow i missed phiz's comment about the fiat, thats the exact same.. cannot lock it if its not shut. that way, youre either inside, or using the key. I dont think theres any way possible to modify this, and i know door lock/latch mechanisms pretty darned well.. but it MAY be possible. If i ever get around to it, I will compare the datsun and soob setups... but that requires disassembly and inspection of one of my only four soob doors, all of which get used often (ie, on my car...)
