Ditto
I have heard that the CV joints in Subarus go bad easily. Is this true for normal driving or just offroading?
Turbone
Only if you have a 4in lift or more.
monstaru
the combination of angle stress and speed can result in some pretty bad blowouts.but, if you watch your angles, stay conscientious about your sped your still likely to get one that wants to go.or you could get lucky and never have one go.what i have found that happens is people think they need a new axle so they go buy a reman. unit from the local parts store and have no idea the quality that they are getting.some have proven good, and some have proven bad, from the same parts store, same part number, same reman manufacturer. pretty much if you want the minimal amount of worry from a set of front axles, i would go with gck brand axles.they are well known in the subaru community for being stout enough for our lifted rigs and obviously do well on the street. what you have to realize is that alot of us have ridden around with a torn boot for 1000's of miles through mud water, and whatever else we could find.whether that was out of laziness, or just plain stubborness, who knows.and when those axles started clicking, gone for 1000's of miles more.and not had a bad experience(read:axle coming out of cup and thrashing control arm, brake lines etc...) they are designed as a weak link so that the cost of repair is relatively inexpensive .as opposed to the transaxle and such.cheers, brian
Numbchux
Only if you have a 4in lift or more. if you've done a body lift, it makes no difference. I started running into problems when I was running almost 5" of pure suspension lift in the rear. but now that I'm down to about 3, I haven't had a problem yet. I've never had a clicking EA-series axle last very long, maybe it's just the mud up here, but as soon as the boot tears, and some mud gets up in there, it breaks (even before the lift). my mom's legacy, however.....went about 10k miles with clicking CVs... long story short: no
NorthWet
Boots tend to deteriorate quickly, possibly because of poor quality aftermarket boots. I think that the tight turning radius of Subarus increases wear and boot failure.
WoodsWagon
If you ever have an axle apart for any reason, reboot it. It's the boots that do them in. I've never had one blow, but I've had 3 go bad because the boot tore.

I've found a generic CV boot from JCWhitney that's quite big for this application, so it's travel is never strained, they seem to be more durable than the stock ones.
