xt manifold on my rx

Recommended Posts

ok, most issues solved and pics in the last post.

ok, so i searched till i couldnt search anymore and i think i even posted in the retrofitting forum, but so far ive no luck.

ive got an 86 rx with wiring from an 87, and i am trying to figure out my way around the wiring of the xt manifold with the xt6 throttle body on it.

has anyone actually got the spyder manifold to work in an rx without just swapping in te entire xt engine management?

how do you get around the lack of the idle air valve looking thing that the spyder manifold doesnt have?

does anyone know what i have to do to get the spyder manifold with the xt6 throttle body to work on my rx? right now, i have a early bare manifold, the only things on it are the fuel rails, auxilery air valve and the coolant temp sensor.. i want to get this thing in my car before october if i can, i might just try to get the xt turbo harness from the junk yard i frequent.

You're going to want to get the intake harness from the XT if you haven't already. I have gotten one to work on my RX but since I have other issues with the car, she's not doing so hot. Basically on mine, I used a NA spyder intake which doesn't have the EGR valve like the turbo spyders, but it has the AAV on it as well. For some reason, I though when I pulled it, it had a knock sensor but when I went to install it, it wasn't there. I think I might have been imagining. Worst case senario, you'll have to do some repinning on the engine harness to get it to work, but its not too hard if you compare it with your stock harness. I had to wire in my knock sensor but I looked at the old harness to see which slots they went into. AS far as the XT6 TB, I haven't a clue...

I have a very vicious evil diabolical easy plan that as of yet has not been tested. Basically after looking at the wiring diagrams the only isses are the idle switch and the TPS, and for the people just following along, the spider TPS is 4 wire and includes the idle switch were as regular MPFI has seperate things and a 3 wire TPS. Heres how you make it go(I think) First, retain your old wiring harness and AAV. Second, splice in the NEW 4 wire TPS using the plug off the XT harness... I drew a picture.

Any questions?

what be that throttle switch in the mpfi diagram?

my manifold doesnt have the egr vavle on it but i think that the xt im getting parts off of does, basically its a complete xt turbo.

i just gotta figure out the tps wiring and the idle air control, the aav is there and i just need to get the right plug connector for it. im wondering if the aav can act as the idle air control valve on my set up. hmmm.

now i just need to figure out the vaccuum routing and such. eh im sure ill come up with something.

alrighty, i got the wiring harness from the xt turbo at the junk yard, its a direct match for what i have, even the pin outs are identical. now i just needs to figureout the idle air control valve issue. like the fact that my throttle body doesnt have a place for one :(

well, i lucked out in the fact that the xt turbo harness matches with my rx harness. i figured out what the part isthat ill be doing without. i think its called a fidc solinoid. or something like that. either way, its not on the larger throttle body at all. but sofar, everything is bolting up and happy, but i still need to figure out a few of the vaccuum routings on the manifold. there are a few lines that are no longer needed but then there are some that im missing, so its going to be a challenge to get it all running right. but i think i can get it going, it shouldnt be too hard.

since it is an 86 you probably have a flapper maf. if you do the tps is different than the mpfi picture shown above. the newer tps wont work. the old tps has and idle switch and a wot(Wide Open Throttle) switch. the new tps has an idle switch and a potentiometer. no wot switch. it might work but you might get a check engine light. i have this same problem. i am putting a 4eat into an 86 turbo wagon. the 4eat needs the potentiometer but the engine needs the wot switch.

EDIT just noticed you have wiring from 87 or is just the manifold wiring 87?

from what ive gathered, the solinoid thingy is used when there is an extra load on the engine at idle, like say if i had a/c or if i turn the wheels while off the throttle/ or something like that. it looks like i might be able to run without that chunk.

im thinking about trying to get it on tomarrow morning before work, if i am functional when i get up/.

well, i got the manifold on the car,it runs and is a lot smoother running on the highway. i think the lack of the fdic? is causing the ecu to get a bit confised. that and the intake pipe after the intercooler keeps popping off under load. i just need to get a longer peice of silicone hosing stuff. right now itjust hasa standard turbonetics pipe coupler that is about two inches shorter than what i need. the only other mechanical issue i have is that the throttle cable is mounted too low on the engine and hits the little bar on the throttle linkage, thus keeping the idle at about 2000 rpm. i just need to finish making a bracket for that, i should be able to fix that today when i get home from the beach.

ill post pics once i finally get home and if i can get the pics ontothe laptop,my pc died :(

  • 2 weeks later...

well, i finally got around to taking pics of the spyder in my car. there are still a few bugs in the system, but im sure i can fix em, i just need the time to get things figured out. the hardest part to figure out will be getting the fdic (?) back in the system. the xt6 throttle body doesnt have the mounting place for it. i think that i can figure it out though. the only other problem im having right now is the clutch. its starting to slip when i put my foot into it.

and now for what we have been waiting for.
