Resetting CEL w/o disconnecting bat or a scanner

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I was wondering if there was a way of resetting the CEL without disconnecting the battery or using a scanner. (I don't want to disconnect the battery b/c I have an aftermarket keyless entry that's a PAIN to configure.) I've been looking for a fuse which supplies the ECM backup and can't find anything.

TIA,

Nathan

EDIT: It's a '98 Legacy Outback

Power your keyless entry system separately, then disconnect the battery.

Well, I got impatient and decided to just disconnect the battery. Turns out the keyless entry system holds its programming with the battery disconnected, CEL is off now, it's all good. Plan "B" was to unplug the actual ECM, but at that point, driving to Autozone starts seeming like a better idea.

try pulling the fuse to the ecu.

Nipper,

In my first post, I mention trying to identify the backup fuse for the ECM. (OK, I called it an ECM instead of an ECU.) On the pain meds again? :)There's no fuse labeled as such. If anybody knows which fuse it is, please share! If nothing else, it'd be nice not to lose your radio presets when clearing the ECU....

no pain meds just not home right now.

trust me i dread having to reset everything after pulling the battery cable. The ECU isnt in an easy place to just unplug it, but it may be easier then reprograming everything.

There should be a fuse or two that kills it. If i rember correctly there are two power sources for the ecu, one always feeding it, the other powers it when the car is on. May be best to go to autzone nad have them clear it. And i would welcome pain meds today anyone got afew extra?:-p

That's located in the underhood fusebox, right? I'll try it next time (hopefully a long time!) the car throws a CEL.

Cheers,

Nathan

You are correct Nathan. It's in the box under the hood. I'm not sure what else it ties to but it may also go to the radio so the radio memory may a or may not be lost by pulling it.
